2013 subaru brz review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. There was a clear purpose in mind: make an affordable sports car without luxury add-ons or mega horsepower, but that is still state of the art when it comes to efficiency in the powertrain and chassis. The brz a 2+2 coupe, with jump seats in the rear for children or stuff like gym bags.  the engine is a new 2. 0-liter with the latest direct port injection, making 200 horsepower normally aspirated. The standard 6-speed manual gearbox is way fun, carefully designed like the rest of the car to be that way. It's the only option for the car, beyond two models, premium and limited.  the suspension is tight; it negates the bumps and hugs the road, and doesn't transmit anything harsh or jarring. The handling is more flick-able than any sports car out there, including the mazda mx-5 (although not counting the nearly identical scion fr-s because anything we say about the brz is also true for the fr-s). The center of gravity is 1. 9 inches lower than that of the porsche cayman. The whole car, including the new engine, was designed with that in mind. Later we drove the brz on oregon back roads at an event called run to the sun, hosted by the northwest automotive press association. We drove as aggressively as we dared, with no worries about losing control, also thanks to the standard non-intrusive stability control that has five levels, including one for track driving. The brz will be a blast at track days or autocross events. The standard summer performance tires are fine on the track, but some track-day drivers and most autocross drivers go for stickier rubber so they'll be able to drive to the event on the street tires and change over to the race tires for the event.  rear-wheel drive is a modern first for subaru, a company that's been totally all-wheel drive almost forever. With no drivetrain to the front wheels, the engine could be placed farther rearward to achieve better balance; the engine is 9. 5 inches farther back than the 2. 0-liter engine in the subaru impreza. And the engines are slightly different at the intake manifold and oil pan, so the brz engine could also be mounted 2. 4 inches lower than the impreza's. The brz's light weight of 2762 pounds, using high-tensile steel in the frame with an aluminum hood, adds to the car's agility.  the styling doesn't turn heads, unless maybe the brz is a flashy color, for example copper like the scion fr-s comes in. If the brz's lines resemble any other car, it might be the same-sized nissan 370z, or the mazda rx-8, a car that might be the best comparable. The brz is super low, with a roof height of only 50. 6 inches, or . 8 inches lower than that of the porsche cayman. From the side, its distinction is in the humps on the fenders harboring 17-inch wheels and tires. The roof has a wide groove, and that adds distinction, and the sideview mirrors are sharpened, which is also neat; but there are some cheap plastic bits on the sides and nose of the car.  the interior is tight, simple and comfortable. That's tight as in design, not lack of space. There's no apologizing for the fabric seats, which are rugged and stylish with excellent bolstering. Little kids will love the two seats in the back. Navigation is standard and blessedly simple. Alloy pedals and red-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are cool. We especially liked the tachometer mounted in center that includes a digital readout for speed that's very easy to read. In fact, the speedometer redundant.  fuel mileage is good, with the 6-speed manual delivering an epa-estimated 22 city/30 highway/25 combined, and the 6-speed automatic bringing better numbers, 25/34/28 mpg. But that's on premium fuel, because of the high compression ratio of the direct port injection engine, so fuel cost isn't as good as mpg appears. lineupthe 2013 subaru brz comes in two models, premium and limited. Scion has a couple colors for the fr-s that subaru doesn't have, and colors on this car make a big difference. The brz looks like everything else and nothing else at the same time, and please don't ask us to explain. If it looks like anything else at all, it might be a cross between the nissan 370z and mazda rx-8.  it's super low, with a roof height of only 50. 6 inches, or . 8 inches lower than that porsche cayman. The coefficient of drag is a sleek 0. 29. But where it seems lowest is at the hood, with its 17-inch wheels jammed up inside wheelwells that rise above the hood. Sideview, the car's only distinction is those humps over the fenders. The wheels have many sharp spokes, some black and some alloy.  the nose looks like its designer knocked it out in an afternoon. Not that it's ugly, because it isn't; it's just simple, almost cookie-cutter. Big hexagon mouth, corners trimmed. Hid headlamps are sharp triangles pointing toward the grille, like pizza slices smoothed out so they don't look like pizza slices.  the roof has a wide groove, and that adds distinction; it spreads out, so by the time it reaches the top of the rear window, most of the roof is groove. The sideview mirrors are sharpened, which is also neat, but it would be neater if they weren't black on the bottom half. There are some awful gray or black plastic things just forward of the sideview mirrors. At the tail, the lamps are round red led lights that look good when they're lit up, with white wings that don't look so good, hiding amber turn signals. Twin tailpipes come out of the black diffuser that has vertical ridges that appear to have been copied from the batmobile. Between the pipes there's a red triangle reflector that somebody forgot to remove from the european version (where it's a foglight), and a white backup light. interiormaybe spartan isn't the best word to describe the brz interior, because spartan implies it's lacking, but spartan is how this car should be, so spartan is just right as far as we're concerned. It's simple navigation. Even a subaru rep couldn't get the nav to get within about 2000 miles of where we wanted to go. Although recently a chrysler 300 we drove got it right.  we like the rugged fabric seats; they have an appropriate look and feel, not a cut-rate cloth feel. The bolstering is good and tight; maybe too tight, as very broad backs won't fit. The three-spoke steering wheel is leather-wrapped with red stitching, and looks cool. So do the alloy pedals, including the dead pedal that's very functional and great to have in a car like this.  gauge-wise, there's a big tachometer in the center, with a small shift light on the left side of the dash; not the best place but bette. 2011 subaru impreza wrx review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Value and the beauty of all-wheel drive. introductionthe subaru impreza has been a bestseller for years, and it set sales records in 2010 while others struggled. It packs in a lot, for its size and price. It deserves to be a top choice in foul weather or on rough roads. But it's an easy car to live with even in the best of conditions. It's comfortable and easy to drive. The interior is simple and straightforward, and everything is easy to operate. Cargo capacity after the 60/40 rear seats are dropped is excellent.  the impreza is solid and safe, the ideal size for running around town while holding its own on the freeway with trucks and big suvs. Many people nonetheless prefer the lines of a simple sedan.  the impreza outback sport comes only as a five-door. It's prepared for travel on unpaved roads and can easily carry gear for outdoor work or activities, from sports to dogs. Outback sport includes 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, a raised suspension, foglights, all-weather package, and cargo tray. This lowers the center of gravity and improves the balance, contributing to agile cornering. What's more, the impreza shares the quick wrx steering rack, with 2. 8 turns lock-to-lock, and a tight 34. 8-foot turning circle. There's no lacking in power at any rpm range.  the standard 5-speed manual gearbox works well. Impreza 2. 5i premium 18,495) and 5-door 18,995) upgrade to a new am/fm stereo with single-disc cd player and six speakers, auxiliary input jack, bluetooth hands-free calling, ipod, usb port and satellite radio capability. Options include 17-inch 12-spoke alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and tomtom navigation system.  outback sport 19,995) includes a heavy duty raised suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, front and rear bumper underguards, projector beam foglights, crossbars for the roofrails, heated front seats and sideview mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel with audio and cruise controls. Rearview camera is optional.  safety equipment on all impreza models includes the subaru advanced frontal airbag system featuring side-impact air bags and full-length airbag curtains. Active safety features include abs with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control, and all-wheel drive. They also share a character crease in the side, although the 5-door's edginess vanishes in the sedan, which uses old-fashioned red taillamps, an understated black valance under the grille, and a dual exhaust: two pipes versus the 5-door's one.  the roofline of the 5-door is only 0. 2 inches higher than the sedan, although the coefficient of drag is 0. 34 vs. 0. 32. (the outback sport is 0. 35 thanks to the roof rack.)  the outback sport is a 5-door. Its styling is edgy, with flared fenders, a blocky butt, and short rear overhang with silvery taillamps. A neat nose rises up and back to the aerodynamic spoiler over the liftgate. The roof rack includes high crossbars that add to the outdoorsy look. The ground clearance is raised, but only by a fraction of an inch; the larger wheels (17-inch alloys) with all-season tires add to the rugged look, more aggressive than the smoother but vanilla sedan. The outback sport looks at home on a gravel road high in the mountains. interioreffort and style have gone into the sweeping twin-cockpit design of the impreza cabin. The quality of the interior materials is good. The titanium color for the dashboard trim looks nice.  the steering wheel tilts and telescopes, which is good, but it doesn't seem to tilt high enough. Speaking of visibility, rearview vision is adequate in the 5-door hatchback but not great.  on the dashboard above the center stack there's a horizontal window with digital readout for temperature, time, and fuel mileage, but it's not readable in the sun, and distance to empty is unavailable. The stack itself contains the usual vents with a six-disc cd changer above big easy climate control knobs. There's a nice shift lever behind a cubby and coinholder, and ahead of two cupholders and a 12-volt outlet; between the seatbacks there's a small deep console. The door pockets hold 32-ounce cups. Their outside edges are rugged and handsome, but the wider center part is made of a material that looks sort of like a pinstripe suit, and which attracts and won't let go of things that commonly float around cabins, especially dog hair. Considering that subaru owners are well-known dog lovers, who take them everywhere, we find this issue with the seats shocking. The available leather-trimmed upholstery would likely be a better choice for dogs.  rear-seat accommodations in the 5-door models are average. There's good headroom, while hip and shoulder room in the rear are decent. The rear-seat legroom is a slim 33. 5 inches. The rear seatback angles are reclined for relaxation, and the rear doors open wide, 75 degrees, so ingress and egress is easy, an important quality.  cargo capacity in the 5-door, after the 60/40 rear seats are dropped, is excellent for a car of this size. As a runabout that's not too big and not too small, it's solid, safe, simple, and provides standard all-wheel drive so it's ready for any highway driving condition. It's good for the daily commute or for heading to the mountains in january.  there are two different all-wheel-drive systems on the impreza models. Those with the manual transmission use locking center differential with viscous coupling, which distributes power evenly between the front and rear wheels on dry pavement, and shifts the torque around only when a tire slips. The models with automatic transmission use what subaru calls active torque split that transfers power based on acceleration and deceleration, as well as slip. 2003 subaru legacy review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Just say no to suvs. introductionsubaru legacy and outback models have much in common. Most important is their impressive stability, no matter the road conditions nor the speeds. It always feels connected to the road and ready to go faster.  the outback is a great alternative to a sport-utility vehicle. It handles superbly on wet pavement, dirt roads, and on snow and ice, better than an suv in all but the roughest terrain. Outback rides and handles much better than a truck. Powerful six-cylinder versions deliver strong acceleration performance yet offer much better fuel economy than suvs. Legacy costs less than other mid-size sedans that don't offer all-wheel drive, and it easily motors past those other cars when it snows. It stops much more quickly than an suv, whether the roads are dry, wet, or covered with snow. When the roads are dry, legacy and outback are fun to drive, more fun than an suv.  . lineupsubaru revised the legacy lineup for 2003. Legacy sedans and wagons are now available in l, l special edition, and gt trim. Prices range from $19,495 for an l sedan to $25,695 for a gt wagon.  l models are more than adequately equipped, with air conditioning, abs brakes, tilt steering, power windows and door locks, 15-inch steel wheels. Like all subaru models, it comes standard with all-wheel drive. The special edition model adds luxury features, including 16-inch alloy wheels, 205/55r16 all-season radial tires, fog lights, a moonroof, a black leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle and wood grain-patterned trim.  gt adds sportier suspension tuning, a limited-slip rear differential, power seats with leather, side-impact airbags, and other up-market equipment. But the outback has more standard equipment, a higher stance, and a more rugged look than the legacy. The corresponding wagon is the l. Bean edition, for $29,995. Top of the line is the h6-3. 0 vdc, in sedan 30,895) and wagon 32,395) variants. Vdc stands for vehicle dynamic control, which combines variable torque distribution with all-speed traction control and dynamic stability control (dsc). H6-3. 0 designates the 3. 0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine. The six-cylinder is rated 212 horsepower and comes only with an automatic transmission. However, the clean lines and short overhangs of the legacy give it a purposeful look. The more time we spent with it, the more its looks grew on us. Subaru's designers have come up with an attractive profile that looks at home among its european competitors.  a high trunk line on the sedan lends a distinctive look, aids aerodynamics and increases cargo capacity; while a low hood line gives the legacy a wedge-shaped stance. Simple cladding along the middle of the doors and along the sills adds character. The front of the car features a big grille and large headlights that fit flush with the bodywork.  exterior door handles are small. There is little difference between the sedan and station wagon other than carrying capacity and appearance.  all of the outback wagons share chunky, functional styling. The front grille and bumper are new for 2003, but retain a beefy appearance. Broad body cladding from mid-door downward dominates the profile. Dressy alloy wheels add a dash of flash. The rear view features wraparound taillights and a cut-down bumper into which the hatchback door is neatly recessed.  outback sedans are far more rarely seen than outback wagons. The heavy body cladding on the outback sedan looks a little less natural than on the wagon, like wearing a three-piece suit and hiking boots.  . interiorthe interior of the subaru legacy is clean with nice detailing. The driving position is comfortable. The front seats adjust to fit most any size passenger. Visibility is good in all directions with the exception of straight back, where the view is hindered somewhat by the trio of headrests perched atop the back seat. Switchgear and controls are easy to reach and uncomplicated to use. The large tachometer and speedometer and the smaller fuel gauge and water temperature gauge are well shaded and easy to read in all lighting conditions.  the legacy dash is covered in a nice black and gray plastic trim with a heavy grain finish. The special edition model has imitation wood paneling. The shifter surround is an attractive piece finished to look like brushed aluminum. The leather-wrapped steering wheel feels comfortable.  the outback vdc's cabin is very nicely appointed as well. The vdc boasts leather-trimmed seating, an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, momo steering wheel, automatic climate control and a high-line sound system. Manufactured by mcintosh audio (known to audiophiles for their premium home stereo components) the system feeds 200 watts of power through seven speakers. The am/fm/weather-band receiver houses a six-disc cd changer. The retro-looking faceplate stands out in a crowd, as does the exceptional sound quality. The interior of the outback l. Bean is upholstered in two-toned leather with wood trim, and bears the logo of the freeport, maine, outfitter. Available seat heaters are welcome when the weather is icy.  there is room enough for two adults in back (three in a pinch), though six-footers will find rear leg room in short supply, especially if the front-seat passengers are similarly long of limb. The rear seats are firm and supportive.  cargo space behind the wagon's 60/40 split folding back seat is plentiful, measuring 68. 6 cubic feet with rear seats folded and 34. 3 cubic feet with all seats in place. Lift-over height in back is low, affording easy access to cargo through the hatch. A retractable cover shields the contents from inquiring eyes. The available cargo mats are well-designed, reminding us of some of the best aftermarket mats.  sedans have a pass-through hole from the trunk behind the arm rest in the center of the back seat, but we found it hard to open. The sedan's rear seats do not fold down. Also, there's no remote trunk release on the key fob.  the legacy special edition and gt wagons, and outback vdc and l. Bean wagons feature an unusual dual power moonroof. The front section pops up; the back opens and closes fully.  . driving impressionsubaru legacy strikes an excellent balance between handling and ride quality. It feels smooth, refined, and sure-footed. This balance comes from all-wheel drive, suspension design, and a low center of gravity.  handling is very balanced. Dive into a corner with too much speed and the legacy understeers mildly; lift off the throttle and it transitions into mild oversteer. That makes it easy to drive, even at the limit of the tires. This makes the car easier to control on dry pavement and is especially helpful when the road surface is slippery. There's lots of grip under hard acceleration in the wet and the legacy feels really stable at speed on wet roads. Manual-transmission models rely on a viscous coupling, a kind of speed-sensitive automatic clutch, to limit wheel slip at either e. 2010 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fuel economy is an epa-estimated 20/26 mpg city/highway with automatic transmission.  the turbocharged forester xt has twin cams and boasts 224 horsepower. The xt is more desirable because of its superior power, though it calls for premium fuel and rates 19/24 mpg. Forester's 16. 9-gallon fuel tank can last about 400 miles on the highway.  introduced as an all-new model for 2009, this is the third generation of the forester, and it's the best-selling forester ever and the best-selling model in the subaru line. Redesigned for the 2009 model year, the forester features a wider track and longer wheelbase than before, a double wishbone rear suspension, more cargo space, more rear-seat legroom. The 2010 forester 2. 5x premium comes with a 10-way power driver's seat, and the optional navigation system now includes bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity. lineupthe 2010 subaru forester comes in three trim levels, all with all-wheel drive. The 2. 5x models come with the 170-hp engine; 2. 5xt models get the 224-hp turbocharged engine.  forester 2. 5x 20,295) comes with black or platinum cloth upholstery, air conditioning with rear vents and an air filtration system, a 60/40 split rear seat, sound system with single-disc cd, height and lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat, cruise control, rear window wiper, and a trailer wiring connector, and 16-inch steel wheels with wheelcovers. A special edition package 400) adds 16-inch alloy wheels and roof rails.  forester 2. 5x premium 22,795) adds 17-inch alloy wheels with wider-profile all-season tires, privacy glass, 10-way power driver's seat, a reclining rear seat with retractable tray, roof rails, power moonroof, and steering wheel audio switches. Exterior mirrors are body-color and door handles are chromed. There's a choice of five-speed manual or automatic 23,795). A cold weather package 400) includes heated seats, mirrors, and wiper de-icer.  forester 2. 5x limited 25,995) features perforated leather seats in black or platinum, seatback storage pockets, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, 6cd changer with mp3/wma and six-speaker circle surround sound, automatic climate control, foglights, chrome tailpipes. It comes with the automatic transmission and cold-weather package as standard.  optional on the 2. 5x limited is a touch-screen navigation system 1,800) that includes a stereo upgrade, auxiliary audio and video input jacks, sirius satellite radio, and a bluetooth hands-free microphone. A navigation and convenience package 2,300) bundles all of the above with hid headlights, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, one-touch folding rear seats, and a cargo cover.  forester 2. 5xt premium 26,495) features upgraded cloth upholstery, aluminum pedal covers, a telescoping steering column, and the limited-level stereo. Outside it's distinguished by fog lights, chrome tailpipes, a rear roof spoiler, and a functional hood scoop. Premium comes with the automatic transmission.  forester 2. 5xt limited 28,495) adds the automatic climate control, leather-trimmed upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and the all-weather package. The navigation package is optional.  safety equipment includes two-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags in front, and airbag curtains; active front head restraints; latch child safety seat system; and a tire pressure monitor. Forester and rav4 look similar when parked side by side. All of these are considered crossover vehicles with car-based chassis designed to offer good driving characteristics and good fuel economy.  the forester is slightly longer than the cr-v, slightly shorter than the rav4. Forester is an inch narrower than the other two. It's slightly taller than the cr-v, the rav4 is the tallest.  forester xt is distinguished by a functional hood scoop. We like the five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels. From the rear, the xt has a twin chrome-tipped exhaust and a spoiler over the rear window. interiorinside is a comfortable cabin with comfortable seats. The available perforated leather is a whole new ball game, erasing the almost-frumpy feeling sent by the cloth.  driver visibility is excellent in all directions. The a-pillars were designed to minimize blind spots. The forester xt gets sporty aluminum pedals, which we liked. We found the air conditioning cools well, fast and quiet.  instrument colors have been revised for 2010, for easier readability. There's a digital display over the center stack for time and temperature. The dash has a nice gullwing sweep from the center stack off to the passenger side, in brushed-aluminum-looking plastic material, interrupted only by a single climate vent. Underneath is a big glovebox.  the center stack has aluminum-look trim. Just forward of the shift lever is a good-sized cubby. Climate and audio controls on the center stack are simple to operate. The front doors have a nice elbow rest and large pockets each with a recess for 24-ounce bottles. Cargo space measures 33. 5 cubic feet with the rear seat up, 68. 3 with the seats flat.  the rear seat reclines and includes a retractable center tray with fixed drink holders. Legroom is excellent. The front door is wide, and the rear doors swing open 75 degrees, making it easy to get in and out.  there's a lot of headroom. In the daytime it's hard to read with sunglasses, because there's a lack of contrast. driving impressionwe found the forester dazzling in its sure-footedness and comfortable ride, never once whimpering in the face of abuse. There's 8. 7 inches of ground clearance and good yokohama geolander tires with the 17-inch wheels.  the electronic stability control is programmed to allow the tires to spin a bit, under acceleration, so the throttle won't cut out on dirt roads. We tackled an awe-inspiring steep rutty hill, foot to the floor to climb the final 100 yards, and the forester made it. A honda cr-v couldn't come close on the same run.  the two engines differ dramatically in torque. The normally aspirated single overhead-cam engine delivers 170 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The turbo delivers 226 pound-feet at 2800 rpm and 224 horsepower.  on the freeway, a forester 2. 5x has to work to keep up with a forester xt. It kicked down a lot in other places, too, including off-road. A five-speed automatic transmission seems called for. Or a five-speed manual.  the five-speed manual shifter feels soft, has a longish throw, and raises the nvh level in the cabin, but we'd still choose it over the automatic with the non-turbocharged engine. A nice touch on models with the standard five-speed manual transmission is incline start assist. When cornering on smooth roads, the suspension feels relatively soft, though on dirt roads or rough pavement it feels perfect. The suspension does a good job. The highway ride is comfortable, with no harsh spots. 2014 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Completely redesigned, slightly bigger, much better. introductionthe subaru forester all-wheel drive compact crossover is completely redesigned for 2014. It uses a combination of direct fuel injection, high compression (10. 6:1), subaru's dual active valve control system (d-avcs) and intercooled turbocharging to deliver a much more spirited 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque between 2000 and 4800 rpm.  all 2014 forester models come with subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive. Subaru is a leader in all-wheel-drive technology and this sets forester apart from front-wheel-drive competitors that offer all-wheel drive as an option. A 6-speed manual gearbox supersedes the previous 5-speed manual as standard, while subaru's lineartronic continuously variable transmission (cvt) replaces the old 4-speed automatic.  the cvt mated to the 2. 5-liter engine has a selectable low shift mode that adds engine braking on downhill grades. The high-torque version of this transmission comes with the turbo engine and has steering wheel paddles for manual shifting. That highway rating is a five-mpg improvement over the most fuel-efficient 2013 forester.  compared to the previous-generation model, this new 2014 forester feels more agile thanks to a 50-percent stiffer structure, retuned front strut and double-wishbone rear suspensions and larger, 17-inch tires and wheels. The upgraded rear suspension uses pillow ball joint mounts for its lateral links to smooth the ride. The new electric power assisted steering gives surprisingly good feel and feedback while contributing to improved fuel efficiency.  the much quicker, more athletic and more fun to drive 2014 forester 2. 0xt turbo models boast a sport-tuned suspension on 18-inch wheels and larger brakes with ventilated rotors front and rear.  technology abounds on the 2014 forester: a new rearview camera along with a new color multi-function display are available. The latter delivers even quicker response with eight manually selectable ratios.  all foresters come with symmetrical all-wheel drive. Cvt models use a more sophisticated electronically managed type than do those with the 6-speed manual. The forester 2. 0xt's tighter suspension and more aggressive tires elevate this five-passenger compact cuv almost to the level of sport-sedan fun.  acceleration performance with the standard engine is slow (capable of 0-60 mph in a long 9. 3 seconds), but the 2. 0xt's powerful turbo engine improves that measure to a quick 6. 2 seconds. Earlier subaru boxer engines were rough, but they have become far smoother and more refined in recent years.  the 2014 subaru forester boasts several advantages over its most popular competitors among the compact crossover utility vehicles. Most important are forester's standard all-wheel drive at a lower price than toyota's rav4, honda's cr-v, and mazda's cx-5 with optional all-wheel drive. Forester also boasts a roomier cabin front and rear and surprisingly better epa fuel economy with the available cvt vs. The competition when equipped with automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive. lineup2014 subaru forester models offer a choice of engines. Forester 2. 5i models come with a 170-hp 2. 5-liter engine and a choice of cvt or 6-speed manual. Forester 2. 0xt models feature a 250-hp 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine with cvt.  forester 2. 5i 21,995) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming with steering wheel control switches and a tilt/telescopic steering column, incline start assist, outside temperature display, security system with engine immobilizer, carpeted floor mats, multi-function display with outside temperature and fuel economy readouts, 17-inch steel wheels. A 6-speed manual is standard, forester 2. 5i cvt 22,995) includes the continuously variable transmission.  forester 2. 5i premium 23,495) gets upgraded audio, 10-way power driver's seat, rearview camera, upgraded multi-function display, reclining rear seatbacks, dark tint privacy rear glass, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Premium with the 6-speed manual comes with an all-weather package, which includes heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. Forester 2. 5i premium cvt 24,995) also comes with a panoramic power moonroof, but the all-weather package 500) is an option. Navigation is optional 1,100).  forester 2. 0xt premium 27,995) includes the turbocharged engine and cvt and cloth upholstery with sport bolsters.  forester 2. 5i limited 27,995) gets the cvt and all-weather package as standard, plus perforated leather-trimmed seats, a power rear liftgate, fog lamps, upgraded instrument cluster with lcd, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, automatic climate control and new x-mode, which adjusts the suspension for slick conditions, with hill descent control. The driver assist technology package 2,400) includes eyesight, keyless access/start and hid headlights.  safety features standard on all models include intelligent dual-stage front airbags, front seat side and side curtain airbags with added head protection for front and rear occupants. A rollover sensor activates seat belt pretensioners and deploys the curtain bags if it senses a potential rollover. New for 2014 are anti-whiplash front seats, a driver's knee airbag, brake override and an impact-sensing fuel cutoff. The brake override cuts engine power if both brake and accelerator are applied beyond a certain threshold. All-wheel drive is standard. So-called hawkeye headlights and a slightly taller hexagonal grille define its slightly bolder face. The 2. 0xts also sport dual stainless steel exhaust tips.  the a-pillar (the strips of metal between the windshield and front windows) on the 2014 forester is moved forward for a sleeker silhouette and improved aerodynamics. Forward visibility is improved despite a slightly higher hood (to meet european pedestrian-protection requirements), which makes room for under-hood ducting to feed the 2. 0xts' turbocharger intercoolers instead of their predecessors' boy-racer hood scoop. New partitioned front door side glass and door-mounted mirrors help reduce wind noise and improve side visibility. Subaru says the 2014 forester's 0. 33 drag coefficient is nearly 11 percent better than the outgoing model's. interiorthe new interior takes advantage of the 2014 forester's expanded roominess by creating a feeling of spaciousness through a combination of horizontal design elements and more space between the instrument panel and seats.  the front seats use a new cushion spring array for long-distance comfort, the hip point is 1. 1-inches higher than before, and the driver's seat has 1. 3 inches more fore-aft and 0. 6 inches more height adjustment travel. 2006 subaru impreza review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Premium features come not in the form of fancy interiors but in the form of sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems, turbocharged engines and high-quality engineering designs. The days when the impreza was an inexpensive subcompact, sold mainly on the strength of its low price, are long gone. All models are good fun to drive and quite practical, with decent room in the back seat and good gas mileage. The standard fulltime all-wheel-drive system is legitimately a safety, performance and foul-weather advantage.  on one hand, the least expensive model costs substantially more than some other very good small cars. On the other, even the base impreza has more horsepower than most cars in its class. For less than $18,500, the 2006 impreza 2. 5i sedan and 2. 5i sport wagon (as the base models are now called) come very well equipped. They're the least expensive all-wheel-drive sedan and wagon available in the united states. The wrx is a genuine high-performance car, but too refined now to be considered a boy racer. The crazy fast wrx sti is an ultra-high-performance machine that can run with big dogs like the bmw m3 for tens of thousands of dollars less.  their silhouettes may look familiar, but the impreza models benefit from some serious upgrades for 2006. All models have been restyled front and rear. Power has increased at least slightly across the board. The body structure has been improved and the suspension refined. There's more standard equipment, more safety equipment, more new technology.  the 2006 impreza is more sophisticated, perhaps more serious, but it's still fun and sensible in any guise. It's still loaded with character compared to some of the sanitized appliances that populate this class of car. For 2006 there are 10 models, both sedans and wagons. All come standard with full-time all-wheel drive and a manual transmission. Both are powered a 173-hp version of the 2. 5-liter boxer engine (up eight horsepower for 2006, with variable valve timing and lift), and both come well equipped. Standard features include upscale bits like interior air filtration, auto-off headlights and an outside temperature indicator, as well as air conditioning, an 80-watt stereo with cd, cruise control and remote keyless locks. The 2. 5i sport wagon comes with a split folding rear seat, rear cargo utility bars and cover, roof rails and a trailer harness connector.  the outback sport wagon 19,195) is designed for rugged conditions. The outback's suspension is raised and tuned for more wheel travel (or off-road capability). It adds a chrome grille and gray-metallic lower body cladding, roof-rail crossbars, and projector-beam foglights. The wrx was created as a limited-production specialty car, but it quickly became one of subaru's best sellers, and there are now six variants.  the wrx tr sedan 23,995), new for 2006, gets the high-performance mechanicals and standard features comparable to the 2. 5i. Tr stands for tuner ready, and this wrx is geared toward sport-compact enthusiasts who might choose to equip it with some of the hundreds of dealer-installed or aftermarket parts and accessories currently available.  the wrx sedan 24,995) and wrx sport wagon 24,495) add more features, including heavily bolstered sport seats, automatic climate control, a 140-watt stereo with cd changer, the fog lights and leather trimmed wheel and shifter.  the wrx limited 27,495) and wrx limited sport wagon 26,995), also new for 2006, are the peak of impreza luxury. Their price includes leather seating with dual-mode heaters in front, a power moonroof, windshield wiper de-icers and heated outside mirrors. This is the one most coveted by hard-core driving enthusiasts, and it's distinguished by a huge two-step rear wing and even more aggressive bodywork. The centerpiece is a prominent three-section black mesh grille, which is supposed to reflect subaru's aircraft heritage (more accurately, the aircraft heritage of parent fuji heavy industries). Some reviewers have described the new subaru look in unflattering terms. We're indifferent, at least to the impreza's grille. It certainly would not deter us from owning one of these cars.  the new grille is flanked by comma-shaped light clusters, encased in tinted lenses. The taillight clusters are shaped similarly to those in front, with the red, yellow and clear lenses of individual lights gathered under a smoked cover. The fenders on all impreza models are flared more aggressively, and the wheel wells are filled nicely with standard 16-inch rims.  the impreza outback sport has a bit more space between the tire and the fender lip. That's because the outback's ride height is raised slightly to allow more upward wheel travel. The outback is easy to distinguish from the other wagons, thanks to its chrome grille and two-tone paint. The side molding, bumpers and lower body are finished in steely gray metallic, and the rear bumper has a truck-style vinyl pad, or step.  the impreza wrx now features the sculpted side sills previously reserved for the mighty sti. The 17-inch spoke wheels add purpose. The body-colored side mirrors, new smoked light lenses and softly shimmering paint (not to mention impressive overall panel fit) meld to create a jewel-like finish that would flatter cars costing twice as much.  the wrx sti has been stripped of what many considered its calling card: the big gaping scoop in its hood. Subaru says improved aerodynamics feed the sti engine and intercooler all the air they need through a narrower scoop identical to that on the standard wrx. Perhaps, but saving the cost of tooling a separate hood for the low-volume sti probably helped.  the sti was created as the homologation car, a required street-legal copy of subaru's winning world rally championship cars. Those who care will notice the sti's slightly lower ride height, or the badges or the little spoiler at the trailing edge of the roof. And if none of those things are enough to announce the presence of the fastest subaru ever, no worries. Absolutely no one will miss the giant, two-step rear wing. The sti's rear spoiler may be the most audacious in autodom. And if the wing doesn't shout 'look at me!' loud enough, there are optional gold wheels, just like those on the wrc race cars. The cabin is well designed, judged both by appearance and function, and it's also very well finished. The overall effect is that of a car selling in the $30,000 range, rather than an economy car priced in the low teens. The dash in the base impreza 2. 5i is trimmed with a dark gray metallic material. It's plastic, to be sure, but it looks good and doesn't come off as cheap. The instruments and controls were revised for '05, and they work great. Everything is easy to find and operate, but the package doesn't seem spartan or simplistic.  the wipers are located on a stalk to the right of the steeri. 2008 subaru impreza review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new impreza and outback sport bigger, more refined. introductionthe subaru impreza lineup is redesigned for 2008, getting bigger and more refined in the process. Base impreza and outback sport models return, as do the high-performance wrx and even higher performance wrx sti. The engine produces 170-horspower, enough power for everyday needs and enough oomph for good passing punch. We drove it in the mountains of colorado and found it up to the task, but it had to work hard up steep grades partly due to the thinner air at high altitude. Drivers who want more power should consider the turbocharged impreza wrx, which is surprisingly civil in behavior.  the impreza powertrain is competitive with anything in the compact class, but some rivals offer six-speed automatics that improve fuel economy. The impreza's fuel economy is on par with other all-wheel-drive compacts, but it suffers compared to front-drive rivals. Even a minor wreck costs more than a tank of gas.  the impreza also has a handling advantage versus several competitors. Advanced suspension geometry, a platform built to host the high-performance wrx models, and a low center of gravity thanks to the boxer engine all add up to crisp handling with little body lean in corners. The gauges are easy to read, and there is plenty of storage space for small items. The front seat has enough head room and leg room for tall drivers, and visibility is good to all corners. The outback sport is only a hatchback. A satellite and navigation package 3500) adds a navigation system and sirius satellite radio plus the premium package equipment but with a single-cd player. The popular equipment group 319) adds auto-dimming rearview mirror, compass, and security system shock sensor. Other upgrades include an audio sound package 768) with xm or sirius satellite radio and a subwoofer/amplifier; a short-throw shifter for the manual transmission 374); auxiliary audio input jack 97); roof rack 250); remote engine starting 432); xm or sirius satellite radio 453); and a rear spoiler for the sedan 380). Traction control, electronic stability control, brake assist, and incline start assist (with manual transmission) are standard on all but the 2. 5i, where they are optional. walkaroundthe 2008 subaru impreza has grown up compared to the last model. The width is the same, but the wheelbase is 3. 7 inches longer on an all-new platform. Overall length is also up by 4. 5 inches for the sedan, but is actually down 1. 7 inches for the hatchback. The hatchback's length is taken out behind the rear wheels. Where the last model had a more squared off wagon shape, this one has a raked hatchback shape.  the impreza gets a completely new look for 2008. The front end changes from subaru's somewhat controversial horse-collar shape to the new corporate design that is short and wide. The shape of the grille flows into a pair of cat's eye-style headlights, and its basic shape is repeated below the bumper in an air intake that is flanked by fog lights. The outline of the grille leads into character lines on the hood. The whole effect is more organic and flowing than most cars these days.  the sides of the car are largely uncluttered, except for bold bmw-like shoulder lines that run from the front wheelwells to the taillights. The fenders are slightly flared at the wheels, again lending an organic, flowing shape.  perhaps most important, the impreza now has fully framed door windows, which reduces interior noise and the possibility of leaks. Reviewers have complained about subaru's frameless windows for years.  the impreza sedan ends with a high trunk line, a fairly generic rear end design, and red taillights.  the impreza hatchback, on the other hand, has a raked rear window that leads to an integrated roof spoiler, giving it a sporty demeanor. The dash and center console have lots of plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap. The gauges are black with white markings, red needles and raised silver rings. The gauges are easy to read and the overall look is pleasing.  the center stack has a vehicle information center with the clock, outside temperature indicator, and trip computer information set in a hooded area at the top of the dash. The radio is right below that, followed by a pair of air vents, and finally three easy-to-use climate control knobs.  with the optional navigation system, the radio controls are integrated along the sides of the nav screen. This makes some of the controls small and a bit hard to find, but it shouldn't be a problem after a few weeks. We found the screen hard to read with polarized sunglasses on and hard to read during the day with the headlights on.  small items storage is quite good. The glove box is of a good size. The center console features two cupholders and a deep center console to store cds and life's little trinkets. There is also a small change tray in front of the cupholders, and the front of the console has an open tray to set cell phones and the like.  inside, the impreza has plenty of room for a compact car. On the whole, there is more room than the last model. Even tall drivers should find enough head and leg room. Visibility to all corners is also largely unobstructed.  the back seat is quite impressive. It has good leg room with all but the tallest occupants up front and toe space under the seats is good if those front seats need to be set farther back. Rear head room is excellent. The only minor complaint is the fact that the seat bottoms are fairly flat, meaning long trip comfort may suffer.  cargo room is good, especially in the hatchback. The rear seats are split 60/40 and they fold flat easily via pull-up knobs. In the hatchback, folding the seats down opens up 44. 4 cubic.

2008 subaru outback review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New styling, more refinement. introductionthe subaru outback benefits from revised styling, enhanced performance, and interior upgrades for 2008. The changes improve upon a roomy and comfortable wagon that can go almost anywhere. Electronic stability control is offered on more models. The rear suspension has been retuned for more ride comfort without sacrificing any handling.  styling changes for 2008 feature new front sheetmetal, a larger grille opening, new bumper fascias, and new headlights and taillights. The sedan model has been dropped, yet there are still seven outback models from which to choose. Inside, fabrics and the dash are revised for 2008, the steering column now tilt and telescopes, and all models are pre-wired for satellite radio.  the outback philosophy is similar to that of the volvo xc70, a wagon with a bit more ride height, body protection and traction-oriented tires. However, the outback costs less than the volvo and, with 8. 4 inches of ground clearance, can go much farther into the outback than most owners realize. Reasonable prices, operating economy and a penchant for charging through snow make outbacks a favorite in wintry weather. All use subaru's horizontally opposed engine design, like that employed by the old vw beetle and most porsches. Subaru's engines are mounted low and are compact, keeping the weight low for good center-of-gravity dynamics and a low hood line for great forward visibility.  all come with all-wheel drive, and three different systems are used, depending on the transmission and engine chosen. The end result of good snow-climbing traction and all-weather confidence remains the same for all. None requires any driver action.  inside, outbacks are practical and can be quite simple or quite sophisticated, with a range of seven trim levels. All have five seats, useful cargo area and the majority of amenities and features offered in compact suvs.  outdoors people like its capability and utility. The outback is a great companion for outdoors activities, fishing, hiking, skiing, kayaking. It handles well on gravel roads and holds up to rugged terrain. It can haul a lot of gear and it can accept a nine-foot rigged fly rod.  the outback goes off the pavement better than many suvs yet performs as well or better on the pavement. It includes cloth upholstery, ac, cd/mp3/wma audio system, cruise control, trip computer, power locks/mirrors/windows, rear wipe/wash, tilt/telescoping steering column, roof rails, split-fold rear seat, 16-inch steel wheels and tire pressure monitors.  the outback 2. 5i 23,995) adds heated front seats and power driver seat, 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, roof rack cross bars, fog lights, heated mirrors, limited-slip differential, cargo cover/tray/power outlet, splash guards, and windshield wiper de-icing. The automatic is optional 1000).  the 2. 5i l. Bean edition 26,295) comes standard with the automatic and upgrades with a navigation system, a 6cd in-dash player, dual-zone climate control, roof rack cross bars, alloy wheels, cargo tray, and l. Bean mats and badging. Vdc electronic stability control is optional.  the 2. 5i limited 27,395) comes with the automatic and adds to the 2. 5i leather upholstery, 6cd changer, body-colored door handles and mirrors, dual-zone climate control, and woodgrain trim. Vdc is optional.  the 2. 5i limited l. Bean edition 28,995) combines the l. Bean and limited trim and further upgrades with two-tone perforated leather upholstery with bean logo embosses, a power passenger seat, the navigation system, rear center armrest, and the floor mats and wheels. The xt comes equipped with vdc electronic stability control, traction control, and si-drive. The xt comes with all the limited features plus a functional hood scoop, body-color mirrors with turn signals, electroluminescent gauges, aluminum front door and cargo area sill plates, and a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio, cruise, and si-drive controls. The automatic comes with a momo steering wheel. Navigation is optional 2000).  the 3. 0r l. Bean 32,495) features a 245-hp six-cylinder and five-speed automatic. Vdc, si-drive, vtd are all standard, as are an auto-dimming inside mirror, sport-design gauges, and bean-style wheels. Navigation is available.  options include a variety of cargo nets, one of which attaches to the rear seatbacks and ceiling-mounted hooks separating the passenger and cargo compartments, especially useful for dogs. It is, in fact, firmly planted, but it's sleeker than ever if less odd-looking than older subarus generally were. Nicely proportioned tire and wheel combinations and lower body protection at the ends give the impression of off-road-ability, though the fender arches are add-ons we'd prefer built in.  the subaru outback is taller than its fraternal twin, the legacy sedan. Large round fog lamps emphasize and soften the aggressive lower fascia. A low-rise air intake on the xt model's hood hints at power lurking beneath. On the xt and the 3. 0r, the clear-lens turn indicators on the lower edges of the outside mirrors minimize their mass. Wide tires visually stretch the car's stance.  even while standing still, the outback has a look of motion. That begins with the aerodynamic slope of the hood, made possible by the low profile of subaru's horizontally opposed engines. The look of motion is enhanced through the wagon's roof line, which drops steadily rearward from the front doors. This design is functional, combining with the increasing inward tilt of the rear side windows to ease air flow beyond the wagon's tail end. Minimalist splashguards behind both wheel wells and cladding along the bottom of the doors make the body look tightly connected to its wheels, unlike many other off-road capable vehicles.  on the rear of the wagon, all the lines (roof, rear window outline, beltline, bumper and rocker panel) draw inward toward the car's center, giving it a taut, neat finish. Large, geometric taillights cover the upper corners of the rear fenders. Small, almost demure backup lights are embedded high in the liftgate on each side of the chrome eyelid over the recess for the rear license plate. The secondary, high-mounted stop light is centered in the roof-high spoiler behind a stylish clear lens. The bumper has a plastic cover on it to avoid marring the paint hauling things or animals in and out. interiorthe outbacks have comfortable, versatile cabins. The front seats in the base model are comfortable, but not cushy, upholstered in a durable fabric that's reasonably grippy, more so than the leather in the limited models. Rear seats are bolstered about the same as the fronts, with a minimal rise in the center in recognition of the driveline hump. The leather in the limited had a thick feel, but it is richly surfaced. The front seats in the xt and more expensive models have fuller bolsters and better overall support; the lumbar adjustments can be set from very soft to accommodate sensitive lower backs, to very aggressive to brace a classic ramrod spine. Bottom cushions are deeper than many, but they could offer more thigh support. The perforated leather insets in premium models add some grip that is lacking in the smooth-finished leather and allow a small amount of air flow that's refreshing on hot and cold days.  the dash is topped with high-quality, seamless vinyl, mildly textured and finished in a low-gloss to minimize reflected glare in the windshield. Gauges are large and round, positioned directly in front of the driver and easy to scan through the three-spoke steering wheel. Cruise controls on lower models are contained in a stubby stalk attached to the steering wheel at about the 4 o'clock position; on the spokes on higher trims.  in the upper half of the dash to the left of the gauges are two vents, one small for d. 2008 subaru impreza review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All new for 2008, this latest version of subaru's venerable impreza wrx sti features a striking new exterior that understates this cars very real performance credentials. With it's flared fenders and wider stance, the new five-door, all-wheel drive sti has a more aggressive look than the other, more sedate, impreza's. To plant all that power, subaru utilizes a driver controlled center differential (dccd) system, which claims to be the world's only hybrid mechanical/electronic limited-slip differential. Standard front seat mount, and front and rear curtain airbags offer occupant protection. The impreza wrx sti is redesigned for 2008 as a hatchback.

2006 subaru legacy sedan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Newly designed lineup expanded with more models. introductionthe newly redesigned line of subaru outback models has been further improved for 2006. The new cabins are more comfortable, more luxurious, and better looking, and the styling was refined, so the outback doesn't look as boxy as before. More important, it was re-engineered with a lower center of gravity for improved handling and stability, even though it already boasted those attributes in spades, especially when compared with sport utility vehicles.  the outback features the latest in subaru's premium technology, with one of the world's best all-wheel-drive systems paired with boxer-style engines that help it achieve a low center of gravity. As a result, the outback delivers excellent all-weather capability. Whether on paved or unpaved roads, the outback's handling is vastly superior to that of a sport utility, yet it can stand up to a fair amount of abuse. Outback wagons are an excellent choice for outdoor activities.  safety is enhanced with dual-stage frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and full coverage side curtain airbags. Active front-seat head restraints are standard. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution come standard. They come with a choice of three engines. The five-speed manual transmission is beefed up to handle the additional power, and a five-speed sportshift automatic is available 1200).  the 3. 0 r models, the l. Bean edition and the vdc limited come with a six-cylinder engine rated at 250 horsepower and the five-speed sportshift automatic. For 2006, the vdc model (for vehicle dynamics control, an electronic stability control system) comes standard with the navigation system, an option on the other outback models 2,000).  the base 2. 5 i 24,795) comes standard with an eight-way power seat, tilt steering wheel, auto-off headlights and cruise control, power windows, power mirrors, power door locks, and remote keyless entry. Air conditioning comes standard, along with durable-looking fabric upholstery and a six-speaker am/fm/cd stereo. The cargo area has its own light, carpet (including on the back of the rear seats, which are 60/40 split fold-down units), grocery bag hooks and a retractable cargo area cover. The xt limited 30,995) adds perforated leather seat trim and the power moonroof.  the 3. 0 r l. Bean sedan 31,295) gets the l. Bean logos, a tire pressure monitoring system, a rear-seat center armrest with trunk pass-through and a single panel power moonroof (but trades the turn indicator-equipped outside mirrors for the base units). A momo mahogany-and-leather-wrapped steering wheel has integrated audio controls. Bean wagon 32,495) also gets an auto-dimming inside mirror with electronic compass, l. Bean floor mats and leather-trimmed seats and a removable cargo tray. The 3. 0 r vdc limited wagon 35,395) gets the outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, the dual-pane moonroof, and the navigation system, a three-frequency, programmable remote homelink transmitter, and upgraded audio with an mp3 player and rear subwoofer.  options include the navigation system, packaged with other amenities including dual-zone climate control, and a six-disc in-dash cd changer 2,000). A variety of cargo nets is available, one of which attaches to the rear seatbacks and ceiling-mounted hooks separating the passenger and cargo compartments, a must-have feature. Other options include an auto-dimming/compass rearview mirror 183), an upgraded security system with perimeter alarm 98); a cargo area spotlight 65); a subwoofer/amplifier 273); a hood protector 85); a front bumper underguard 136); all-weather floor mats 55); locks for alloy wheels 41); a short-throw shifter fo. walkaroundthe outback is a new vehicle, having been redesigned for 2005. It looks firmly planted. It is, in fact, firmly planted, but its smartly crafted fender blisters, deep front bumper and nicely proportioned tire and wheel combinations add to this impression. For 2006, the 2. 5 i and 2. 5 i limited models have been upgraded with 17-inch wheels as standard equipment, as on the higher-level models.  the outback is taller than its fraternal twin, the legacy, and is further distinguished with two honeycomb-like bars that split the outback's grille horizontally, highlighting its extended, octagonal shape. Large round fog lamps emphasize and soften the aggressive lower fascia. A low-rise air intake scoop on the xt model's hood hints at power lurking beneath. On the xt and the 3. 0 r, the clear-lens turn indicators on the lower edges of the outside mirrors minimize their mass. Clearly outlined fender blisters make the gap between tire and wheel well look smaller than it is. Small, almost demure backup lights are embedded in the liftgate on each side of the chrome eyelid over the recess for the rear license plate. The secondary, high-mounted stop light is centered in the roof-high spoiler behind a stylish clear lens.  in the sedan, the silhouette rises gradually to the a-pillar, then loops up over the geometrically arched side windows and back down behind the upscale, bmw-like c-pillar where it merges with the shoulder-like beltline before wrapping around the trunk, aerodynamically tapered like that of the wagon the back end of the sedan traces the rounded shape of the car, with visible shoulders connected by a smoothly arcing trunk lid, concave below the trailing top edge. The license plate is inset in the rear, and large, trapezoidal taillights wrap around the rear fenders. interiorthe outbacks have comfortable, versatile cabins. The front seats in the base 2. 5 i model are comfortable, but not what one might call cushy, upholstered in a durable fabric that's reasonably grippy, more so than the leather in the 2. 5 i limited. Bottom cushions are deeper than many but could offer more t.

1998 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Off-highway capability with sports sedan performance. introductionthe subaru forester isn't a sport-utility vehicle in the traditional sense. In many ways, it's much better than the small suvs that have been recently introduced. As a result, the forester inspires confidence in slippery conditions in ways that traditional truck-based sport-utilities can never hope to do. Subaru's all-wheel-drive system constantly redirects power to whichever tires offer the best grip, providing precise control in all types of conditions. Its long, soft springs and stiff shocks allow lots of controlled wheel travel so handling balance isn't upset in bumpy corners. And its generous ground clearance allows it to tread places a sedan cannot go.  the rest of time, which is most of the time, the forester drives like a car. Best of all, the forester is fun to drive, a phrase that doesn't really apply to trucks. That's good because the impreza boasts a rigid chassis and is used as the foundation for subaru's rally cars, which have won the punishing world rally championship two years in a row.  all foresters are powered by the 2. 5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine found in the legacy outback. Dropping the bigger legacy's engine in the smaller, lighter impreza platform results in good acceleration performance. Honda's 2. 0-liter engine is smooth and responsive, but its 126 horsepower doesn't get the 3,153-pound all-wheel-drive cr-v off the dime very quickly when equipped with an automatic transmission.  with horizontally opposed pistons, subaru's 2. 5-liter 4-cylinder engine is just over half the length of a traditional inline-4. Because the engine is so much shorter, there's more room available for people and cargo. The beauty of subaru's all-wheel-drive system is that it works full time and operates seamlessly. About the size of a grapefruit, the transfer system takes up little space and adds little weight. It does not have a low-range set of gears, however, and is designed more for blasting through snow and mud than creeping up steep rocky faces. The rav4 or the jeep wrangler are better suited for rock climbing, but the forester is quite capable of carrying a trout fisherman to that remote stream or a backpacker to that distant trail head.  because it isn't nearly as tall as a sport-utility, it's much easier to load a kayak, a set of skis and other car-top gear onto the roof of the forester.  forester is available with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Automatic transmissions are often the best choice for v8- and v6-powered sport-utilites, but subaru's manual gearbox shifts as easily as a 5-speed on a compact and it makes driving the forester more fun and more efficient. All three are mechanically identical and the base forester comes with a high level of standard equipment, including air conditioning, power windows, fog lights, roof rack, rear window defogger, trailer harness connector, reclining front bucket seats with adjustable lumbar support, tilt steering, and an am/fm/cassette stereo.  the l model adds antilock brakes (abs), power locks and a cargo tray. The s model adds rear disc brakes, a chrome grille, big power mirrors, deluxe cloth interior, cruise control and vanity mirrors. The s model also comes with lower profile 215/60 h-speed-rated yokohama geolander 035 all-season tires mounted on 16-inch alloy wheels, while the other two models come with 205/70sr15 bridgestone dueler 684 all-season tires on 15-inch steel wheels. interiorone of the first things we noticed about the forester is that the seating height is comparable to that of a sedan. Visibility out front is excellent, a benefit of a low hood and large windshield. It's easy to load cargo into the back of the forester; the rear gate lifts out of the way and a rubber cargo mat protects the interior.  subaru's interior trim is as good or better than what's found in the toyota rav4 with softer, warmer interior fabrics, though it lacks the design elegance and refinement of the honda cr-v. The radio controls are on the small side and the windshield wiper motor seems a bit noisy. driving impressionwe drove the subaru forester up and down gravel roads on the western slopes of washington state's cascade mountains, then we spent a week in one around annapolis, maryland.  crisp throttle response and competent handling make the forester fun to drive. We have also driven foresters with the 5-speed manual gearbox, which shifts smoothly and makes the car more fun to drive. The pedal arrangement is such that the forester can be driven like a sports sedan and this makes it more enjoyable on mountain roads and dirt trails.  winding gravel roads are the perfect environment for the forester. We highly recommend the forester. assembled ingunma, japan. options as testedautomatic transmission, cold weather package (dual-mode heated front seats and heated side-view mirrors). model testeds. 2004 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Recently redesigned, now with a turbo option. introductionthere used to be a poster of ted turner wearing cowboy boots and a charming cocky grin, saying, 'i was country before country was cool.' the subaru forester could borrow that expression and say, 'i was crossover before crossover was cool.'  the forester may have invented that style of semi-suv in 1998, before the word came along. Now the new crossover vehicles are finding their own identities, including higher performance, but the forester isn't letting them get away.  the new 2004 subaru forester 2. 5 xt (t for turbo) brings 210 horsepower to the table and a dazzling 235 pounds-feet of torque for exhilarating acceleration performance.  the rest of the forester line continues to offer reliability, fuel efficiency, cargo room, safety, and its time-tested all-wheel-drive system. Extensively revised for 2003, the second-generation forester is roomier and more upscale than before. It has comfortable, highly supportive seats. It's a better vehicle on treacherous roads than an suv. lineupthe 2004 subaru forester comes in three versions: the basic 2. 5 x 20,895), the well-equipped 2. 5 xs 23,145), and the new high-performance 2. 5 xt 24,970). The x and the xs produce 165 horsepower and 166 pounds-feet of torque, while the turbocharged xt raises the level to 210 and 235.  standard features include a 80-watt stereo with cd player, remote keyless entry system, 16-inch sport wheels, variable intermittent windshield wipers and a trailer harness connector.  the 2. 5 xs adds automatic climate control, electronic brake force distribution (ebd), lower body cladding, leather accents and a six-disc cd changer. All subarus come with all-wheel drive. A limited-slip rear differential is optional. Also available are heated front seats and exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer.  safety features include abs and pedals that give way in a crash, reducing leg and foot injuries. The airbag system is extensive, including front airbags with dual stages for the passenger, and side-impact airbags in the front. A supporter of tread lightly! It's relatively small, noticeable when parked alongside a mid-size suv like an explorer. It's boxy, as is any such car that uses space so efficiently. There's 7. 5 inches of ground clearance, under a large molded front 5-mph bumper with integrated fog lights and a horizontal air intake at the bottom. The standard roof rack with cross rails is flat black, and the body cladding comes mostly in different shades and textures of gray on different models, but the higher-priced monotone looks best because it doesn't add clutter to the car's shape.  the aluminum hood is sculpted with a slight wide bulge, and the front and rear quarter panels have sculpted lines that flow rearward, and would be more effective without the cladding. The rt features good-looking alloy wheels, called six-spoke but actually 12 as the spokes are grouped in twos.  the vertically triangular taillights frame a large hexagonal rear gate with a lot of glass for good visibility, and which opens with an easy touch. interiorthe seating position is high despite the fact that the forester isn't a tall vehicle. This is nice, in the non-suv department. The optional leather interior looks and feels stylish, and, not surprisingly, the instrument panel and controls are well and efficiently designed, using what subaru calls a motorcycle-style instrument cluster. The driver's seat is highly adjustable and provides good bolstering, while the adjustable steering wheel has excellent range. The driver is afforded panoramic visibility from the big windshield, big side glass, and thin a-pillars. A wide rearview mirror and big outside mirrors provide a good view rearward. The wiper blades are designed to sweep a large area of the windshield clean.  rear-seat passengers get good head and leg room. It earned the highest possible ratings for crashworthiness in 40-mph frontal and 30-mph side impact crash tests by the insurance institute for highway safety, the only small suv to earn that rating in both tests.  the interior materials are nice, though the top of the dash looks like plastic. Three big hvac knobs make it easy to adjust the temperature. The audio controls are on the fussy side, however, and the stereo sounds tinny.  standard features include remote keyless entry, good storage space in the console, a separate storage compartment for the front passenger seat, dual visor vanity mirrors with lids, dual sunglasses storage compartments, illuminated window switches, rear window de-icer, remote release fuel door, two 12-volt outlets located in the front cabin and the cargo area, tie-downs for gear and groceries, power windows and locks, and finally a full-size spare tire. driving impressionthe subaru forester is more fun to drive than any sport-utility vehicle and will run circles around them. It handles like a car and can be driven like one. Subaru's variable valve timing system helps too. One drawback to the xt is its lower fuel mileage of 18/23 mpg epa city/highway with the five-speed, compared to the xs model's 21/27. And the xt requires 91 octane fuel.  the standard engine delivers good acceleration, though it doesn't match the exhilaration of the turbo. Subaru's horizontally opposed engine structure (called a 'boxer') is similar in concept to porsche's. Though powerful, subaru's engine isn't as smooth as some.  the five-speed manual transmission works well, though it feels a ropey and has a long throw. The ride is relatively firm due to the short 99-inch wheelbase. Equal-length axle shafts help eliminate torque steer. Underneath the skin, forester's new body structure is strong and light, further improving handling and reducing stopping distances.  the cabin is quiet, even at triple-digit speeds, as we learned on the high-banked oval at talladega motor speedway. Newly designed suspension struts help reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Believe it or not, the forester is aerodynamic, achieving a 0. 36 coefficient of drag. That helps reduce wind noise and improves fuel economy.  the brakes are excellent. We didn't experience any fade while braking hard for the first infield turn off of the oval lap after lap.  later, we tested xs at mudfest near seattle, the northwest automotive press writers' annual event for new and redesigned suvs. There were more than 30 suvs of all sizes there, and the forester xs was the hands-down winner in the slalom. It felt like a sports car as it weaved through the cones at more than 40 mph, when some of the. Climate Control✔ Power Windows✔ CD Changer✔ CD Player✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels

2003 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New design brings more room, better handling. introductionextensively revised for 2003, the second-generation subaru forester adds sports appeal and improved handling. The new forester is roomier than before and comes with new features that move its image slightly upscale. Yet it still combines fuel efficiency, cargo room, safety, and the foul-weather advantages of all-wheel drive.  introduced in the 1998 model year, the forester mini-suv soon became a household word. Subaru's answer to the honda cr-v and toyota rav4 carved a niche and achieved respectable sales. The forester looked more rugged than subaru's impreza sedan and less like a wagon than the outback. Although subaru has sold the best-selling imported wagon in the u. For nearly 20 years, the brand has not been easily categorized. The forester attempts to combine the best of both worlds. It works well as a grocery getter, and excels as a backcountry runabout for family camping trips. The transmissions operate with two different all-wheel-drive systems: manual transmissions use what subaru calls continuous all-wheel drive; automatic transmissions use active all-wheel drive.  new standard features include a 100-watt stereo with cd player, remote keyless entry system, 16-inch sport wheels and variable intermittent windshield wipers. Upgraded standard safety features include a dual-stage deployment front passenger airbag, front-seat head/chest side-impact airbags, active front-seat head restraints, and pretensioners and force limiters on the front seatbelts. An optional xs premium package includes monotone exterior trim and body cladding, a power moonroof and optional leather upholstery with automatic transmission models. An all-weather package is also available. walkaroundsubaru forester has undergone a headlamp-to-tailpipe upgrade for the 2003 model year. A sculpted new aluminum hood improves sightlines for the driver, while reducing weight for improved handling.  the rear is significantly changed, with a unique hexagonal rear gate framed by triangular taillights and blister type rear quarter panels. The rear gate opening size is increased to aid with stowage of gear, and the effort it takes to close the gate has been reduced by 30 percent. Textured gray body cladding encases the lower third of base 2. 5x versions. The cladding is a contrasting steel gray metallic on 2. 5xs models, which come with larger gray metallic foldable, heated exterior mirrors. Bumpers have been designed to absorb impact up to 5 mph for reduced damage during parking lot dings.  forester has a bevy of available factory-installed accessories that add to its versatility. A supporter of tread lightly! A trailer harness connector comes standard. interiorin both trim levels, the new forester adds increased comfort and functionality. A high seating point and adjustable driver's seat are aimed at improving visibility, with improved front seat bolstering and additional for/aft adjustment that increases seat travel. The driver's seat has increased height adjustment and the range of the tilt-adjustable steering column has been improved, as well. Back seat passengers get more leg and head room, with no reduction of cargo volume.  remote keyless entry is standard. Also new are a 100-watt weatherband am/fm/cd stereo, a motorcycle-style instrument cluster (shared with the impreza series), a passenger-side stowage compartment, dual visor vanity mirrors with lids, dual sunglasses storage compartments, illuminated window switches on all doors, a rear window deicer and a remote release fuel door. Wiper blades are now larger, as is the swipe area to improve visibility in inclement weather. The inside rear view mirror is larger for improved visibility to the rear. And the rear wiper now wipes the high-mount stop lamp to keep it clear and more visible in bad weather.  new passive safety features include active front seat head restraints and assist grips for all seating positions. A middle rear seat headrest tucks in for improved driver visibility. Three-point safety belts are standard for all five seats. Child-seat tether anchors are included.  forester's cargo area is average at 32. 0 cubic feet but expands to 63. 1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. Two 12-volt outlets are included, in the front cabin and the stowage area, and tie-downs for gear and groceries are standard. Additional stowage areas are provided in the center console. Power windows and locks are standard, as is a full-size spare tire.  the higher-end xs adds leather accents and a six-disc cd changer.  . driving impressionnot long ago, the notion of driving an suv or crossover vehicle on a race track was preposterous or, at the very least, boring. Bumped up it is, but not in the league of these more sophisticated (and more costly) models.  putting the forester to the test at talladega, a superspeedway outside birmingham, alabama, i approached the five-story banking with caution and excitement. Easing the subaru forester's throttle on to full power, i climbed to the top of the 33-degree grade and was quickly traveling at a speed of 100 mph. Level ground was a long way away and a sharp angle to my current path of travel, and looking down gave me a feeling of vertigo. However, the feedback that i got from this crossover suv let me know that there was plenty of grip and good balance, and assured me that its speed and precarious perch were within reason in this controlled environment. Larger front brake rotors have been added to reduce stopping distances.  here, i also found quick throttle response, as well as quick and easy gear shifts. Underneath the skin, forester has a stronger, yet lighter, body structure, which helps reduce the weight of this year's model by almost 100 pounds. In theory, lighter is better because it results in better handling and shorter stopping distances. A rigid chassis is a key element to responsive handling and a quiet ride. The forester boasts an impressive 7. 5-inches of ground clearance. Blocks of wood and other rough materials had been thrown down for us to drive on. The ride was surprisingly comfortable, a benefit of the forester's upgraded suspension.  following the track time, we took a 100-mile-long drive through the talladega national forest and the motorways surrounding the birmingham area.
