2008 scion xb review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Scion says that owners wanted their xbs to be bigger. Since it takes three years to produce a new car, the requests to expand the box must have started coming early.  the new xb is indeed a bigger box, but it doesn't look so much like a box any more. And it isn't, as the increased length reduces the squareness. The styling is considerably improved. Plastic surgery on the chin has made a huge difference, and the other edges and angles are much softer, making the xb more attractive and less funny looking.  it's also less distinctive than before, but it's still distinctive compared to other cars of this size. Utility-wise, it's like the honda fit (front-wheel drive, five-door with good cargo space), but now it looks more like the honda element.  the new xb is 12 inches longer, on a wheelbase that's just 4 inches longer; this means bigger overhangs, which goes against the trend, as most new vehicles increase the wheelbase more than the length, efficient packaging that increases stability. The xb is 2. 8 inches wider, though, and that adds stability. And the wheels have been increased in size to 16 inches, allowing larger disc brakes, front and rear. The xb's brakes are very good.  the xb features electric power steering, which does away with belts, pulleys and fluid. It's quite nimble and fun to drive around town.  the bigger box provides an increase in cargo capacity, but 4. 6 inches of legroom has been lost in the front seat, from 45. 3 inches down to 40. 7; in the rear, the legroom remains the same. The front seats recline almost fully, and the 60/40 rear seats drop flat with one easy pull of a lever.  not visible, but just as significant, is the whopping 50 percent increase in power. The xb now uses the same 2. 4-liter engine that powers the quick tc coupe. It makes 155 horsepower, an increase of no less than 55 over the 1. 5-liter engine in the 2004-2007 xb. The engine employs all of toyota's considerable variable valve timing technology (vvt-i), and gets 22/28 miles per gallon, at the epa's ulev-ii (ultra-low) emissions ratings. The xb would be smoother with a five-speed automatic, but that's not available. lineupwith all scions, there is just one model but a million options. That's the scion personalization theme. The xb with manual transmission is $15,650 and automatic $16,600.  standard equipment on the xb includes charcoal fabric interior, air conditioning, cruise control, information display, 160-watt pioneer audio system with ipod and auxiliary connection, tilt steering wheel with audio controls, remote keyless entry, power side mirrors with turn signal indicators, power windows, and door locks, halogen headlamps, tinted glass, 16-inch steel wheels with wheelcovers.  options include alloy wheels 795), rear spoiler 423), navigation system 2010) and rear seat dvd entertainment system with 7-inch screens in the back of the front headrests 1599). For those desiring high performance, scion dealers sell many trd (toyota racing development) parts, from superchargers to suspension items to aerodynamic kits.  safety features include vehicle stability control with traction control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist, a tire pressure monitor, frontal and front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. walkaroundbelieve it or not, the scion xb sort of has the limo look going for it. Maybe even a gangster look, like a sedan from the '20s. It's that new roofline with the thick c-pillar that's located all the way at the back of the car, and the uninterrupted dark tinted windows. The roof-to-floor b-pillar is hidden between the doors, covered by parts of the black frames around the windows.  there's also a subtle 1. 5-inch taper from the height of the windows at the front of the front window to the rear of the rear window, adding to the effect of reducing the squareness and making the xb look longer. The old chin stuck out from under a thin grille, but the new unit is cohesive, still with a thin black grille but it's almost flush with the bumper below it. The headlamps are more shapely now, swept back, although they stick out at the sides, like bubbles. Below the thick plastic bumper under the grille, there's another black grille that sucks in air for the bottom of the radiator. At each side there are thin vertical black rubber things, apparently meant to be faux air intakes for brakes. They lend depth to the otherwise massive and flat valance.  the longer body, wide c-pillar, rounded fender flares and loss of the protruding chin make the xb look less square, from any angle. interiorthe interior feels as changed as the exterior looks. There might have been a big loss in front seat legroom, but the driver still has a commanding view of the road. That's exceptional if not unique, for a car of this size. The short nose, big windshield, elevatable driver's seat, and far-away dashboard create this feel. The glass is upright, it doesn't sweep back.  there's less of a stretch from the front-seat passenger's knees to the good-sized glovebox. It's mounted low so it folds down, possibly on the passenger's shins. Above the glovebox there is a long thin tray which might be useful if it had a liner that offered some grip, instead of the hard slick vinyl.  charcoal is the only color for the fabric seats, which are comfortable and well bolstered, although they're shapeless and light on padding in the rear. The fabric isn't as sturdy, outdoorsy or cool as that in the mazda3, but charcoal makes the most of the cloth. At the far left, is the information display, revealing things like fuel mileage and range. Then comes the clock, which is highly readable, unlike so many, the color is orange and it has an eave to reduce being washed out by sunlight. The digital speedometer is excellent, with big numbers that are, like the clock, eminently readable. Beyond these are the gas gauge and temperature gauge.  scion has added a lot of sound dampening material to the xb, and it seems like most of it must be in the firewall. Or else the engine is just quiet. We longed for simpler controls. But the flipside was that the projector low beams are treacherously weak. And for some reason there's only one backup light, on the driver's side. Is it a scion styling thing, like one earring or something?  scion has put special effort into the air conditioning, and it shows. The door handles, however, show little thought about ergonomics. They're horizontal, thin, barely two inches long, and tapered to a point.  most of the slim space between the seats is taken by two fixed cupholders, a slot for a cellphone, and the parking brake lever, leaving room for only a small console compartment re. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter engine borrowed from the sporty scion tc might not move the xb out of econobox territory, but it certainly powers the xb to the front of the field. The 2008 epa measurements say 22/28 mpg city/highway for the xb, so we. Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ Air Conditioning✔ DVD Entertainment System✔ Navigation System✔ Alloy Wheels

2008 scion xd review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new for 2008. introductionthe 2008 scion xd replaces the toyota division's cute, efficient xa. Scion's grand plan is to offer new models frequently, so it was time for the xa to go. While the xd is all new, shoppers can think of it as the second generation of the xa. We think it has lost some of the distinctiveness of the xa, but the xd can be dressed up into a unique, good-looking car, and that remains part of the scion plan. It has a longer wheelbase and wider track yet virtually the same overall length as the xa; that means shorter overhangs for a sportier appearance suggesting more agile handling. With a 1. 8-liter engine making 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, the xd is substantially more powerful than the 1. 5-liter xa model it replaces (by 20 hp). The new xd's engine also benefits from the latest version of toyota's vvt-i, or variable valve timing, technology for strong power and good fuel economy.  the xd comes well equipped, with air conditioning, a high-watt pioneer stereo and a full complement of power accessories.  the xd sets the class benchmark for safety equipment. Front, side and curtain-style airbags are standard, as is a sophisticated anti-lock brake system. The xd is available with optional electronic stability control, which isn't even offered on most cars in its class.  in some respects, however, the xd falls short of the xa it replaces. The xd is heavier than the xa, by 300 pounds, so acceleration is diminished, particularly with the automatic transmission. Also, epa-estimated fuel economy ratings are poorer, but that's complicated by the epa's new testing methods for 2008 models which degrade on paper fuel economy for most cars. The xd is rated at 27/33 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission. And despite its slightly larger exterior dimensions, the xd provides less interior space than the old xa did, and less than key competitors such as the honda fit. The new rear seat is particularly handy. It reclines, slides fore and aft to maximize passenger or cargo room, or quickly folds totally flat, creating an excellent cargo space measuring a maximum 35. 7 cubic feet.  the xd's overall performance is spry. Ride quality is acceptable in most circumstances, and while it isn't the sportiest performer in its class, it can be fun to drive. We recommend the five-speed manual transmission, because the weakest link in the xd package is the optional automatic. Speed and style parts are available from trd (toyota racing development). And aftermarket suppliers are supporting the scion xd with a wide range of products, ranging from an supercharger to carbon-fiber body trim.  safety features include dual-stage front airbags, front passenger side-impact airbags and curtain-style head protection airbags front and rear. A tire-pressure monitor is standard. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. As noted, vsc electronic stability control with traction control is optional, but many competitors in this class, including the honda fit, do not offer electronic stability control. walkaroundthe scion xd is essentially the same size as the honda fit, its most obvious competitor. It's quite a bit smaller than the nissan versa and dodge caliber.  the xd is only half an inch longer than the old scion xa, on a wheelbase that's 3. 5 inches longer. That means shorter overhangs, engineering that should result in a better ride and more room inside.  we're a bit disappointed with the styling, and the more generic look scion is taking across its new line. The new xd looks too much like the new xb. The old xa was a sporty little thing and the old xb was a unique box; now the xd and xb are each sort of a blended box. Its fender flares have lost some of the xa's smooth shapeliness, and its hood is longer and quite bulbous, in place of the xa's cool steep slope from the top of the windshield to the front bumper. The halogen headlights are sleek, but they're pinched in a shape at odds with the roundness of the hood, which has a chrome scion emblem stuck on the front.  the standard steel wheels measure 16 inches in diameter, and the wheelwell gaps have been tightened, which is good. But none of the three wheelcover styles do much for the car. A sharp set of wheels goes a long way toward bringing the xd alive, and that's part of scion's personalization platform. We've seen xds with the six-spoke, 18-inch polished alloy wheels available from scion dealerships, and they totally change the bulky looks of the car. The 17-inch black alloys look great too, and those who don't want to spring for new tires can choose 16-inch alloys. With wheels and a rear spoiler to extend the lines of the roof, the xd looks more like something worth showing off. interiorscion has dared to be different, by its own edict, and that's obvious from the driver's seat of the 2008 scion xd. The aesthetic appeal lies more in the interior's unconventional elements rather than clean, elegant design, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. From the functional perspective, the xd interior works well, with only a couple of things worth complaining about.  materials used inside the xd are generally good for a car in this price range. The expansive plastic that covers the dash and door panels has a woven-grain, matte finish, and it's more appealing than the glossy hard stuff in some inexpensive cars. The shiny black plastic trim pieces look like piano lacquer, and better than fake wood or metal.  the seats are covered in dark charcoal fabric and are quite handsome, especially when compared to the cloth that comes with some other cars in this class. The upholstery isn't plush, but it feels sturdy. The front seats are firm but not too firm, and provide decent bolstering, which is good because many xd owners will be ripping around corners after they add toyota racing development suspension components.  switches are well placed, with the audio system above the air conditioning controls in the center stack. All the knobs are big and easy to find, though those for the climate controls have a slightly loose, jerky feel.  the gauges are mixed bag. The primary display, which scion calls a concentric combination meter, is a speedometer and tachometer in one package, centered over the adjustable steering column. It's designed to be different, but in this case it's not better. With the tachometer and speedometer needles moving in opposite directions around a circle, it's hard to process the information at a glance. The gas gauge is a bright, easy-to-read led to the left of the steering column, and the xd comes standard with a multi-information display that allows the driver to toggle between the odometer, trip meters, instant fuel economy, average fuel economy, distance-to-empty and average vehicle speed. Not long ago, such trip computers were reserved for luxury cars.  the 160-watt pioneer sound system with six speakers is loud and clear, and plenty for a car this size. The standard system is wired for ipod, mp3/wma, and satellite, and includes an auxiliary input jack. Like the trip computer, the redundant audio controls on the steering wheel spoke are the exception in this class.  somehow, despite gaining three inches in wheelbase, the scion xd has less interior space than the xa model it replaces. It's lost one inch of legroom in front, and passenger volume overall has decreased, from 86. 0 cubic feet to 84. 5.  the xd's rear seat is quite roomy when rear-passenger space is maximized. The rear seat easily slides forward or backward six inches, adding space for either cargo behind the seatback or passengers in front of it. With the rear seat moved full forward, there's enough legroom for a 12-year old; with the rear seat moved back, there's room for medium-sized adults. Head room is expansive, and with the front seat set for a 5-foot, 10-inch driver, there was enough rear legroom for a 5-foot, 9.
