2002 lexus sc 430 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty convertible, refined coupe in one sumptuous package. introductiondismiss the image of conservative car styling from the elite lexus brand because the new sc 430 confronts that theme by injecting eye-catching curves in a slinky design with a daring face, exaggerated wheels and bubble-back rump.  it's both a refined hardtop coupe and a sporty convertible fitted with a sumptuous leather-wrapped cockpit and the powerful mechanical hardware of a serious performance car.  with a muscular v8 engine shooting 300 horsepower to the rear wheels in a classic arrangement, the sleek sc 430 captures the essence of an aggressive two-seat roadster. Yet it elevates the concept to new dimensions by dressing the package in the elegant lexus mode of lavish luxury layered with dazzling electronic displays and sophisticated vehicle controls. lineuplexus builds only one version of the sc 430 58,455). It's loaded with sophisticated safety and performance hardware, then laced with luxurious appointments in leather, wood and chrome. It's also a dramatic, eye-catching statement that appears quite different from the restrained styling of a typical lexus sedan.  up front, the elongated prow projects a dynamic face flashing glints of chrome from triangular headlamp clusters and a center grille in trapezoidal shape underscored by a body-colored air dam studded with articulated halogen foglamps. Two notched lines in the raked hood cut into inboard corners of headlamps to thrust the grille forward and bump the central hood section higher than the flanks. These hard lines also define a pair of sharp-edged shoulders, which are set above flared front wheelwells pegged forward with scant front overhangs.  the arching profile has fluid lines tracing from the aggressive rake of windshield pillars followed across the bowed roof to thin curves of rear pillars that stab into the bubble format of the back deck.  at the tail, a stubby shape integrates multi-lens taillights sculpted as triangles skewed with curves. The thin spoiler, attached at the factory as an option, interrupts curves on the bowed trunk above a thick bumper band in monotone, with chrome-tipped exhaust pipes protruding from both bottom corners.  the hardtop is composed of lightweight aluminum in two segments with a fixed glass rear window. It hinges in the middle and tucks into the trunk with a quick mechanical movement controlled by a console toggle switch. Behind the front seats, there's a pair of smaller form-fitting rear seats rigged with vertical backs, integrated headrests and three-point safety belts. The driver faces a steering wheel with tilt and telescope movements plus toggles for the cruise control system. Immediately ahead is the instrument panel with three chrome-ringed binnacles housing round analog gauges that display crisp white-on-black graphics and vivid red needles. Switches for windows and door locks dot the driver's padded armrest on the door to the left. To the right above the console, horizontal modules hold audio and climate systems, plus a video screen for the available dvd-based navigation system.  the automatic climate system has a separate led display indicating temperature readouts and air flow, with independent controls for left and right sides of the cabin. This smart system includes temperature sensors scattered around the cabin and lap vents that deploy when the top is open to automatically compensate for warm sunlight flooding the cabin.  the 240-watt audio equipment was developed exclusively for the sc 430 at the connecticut-based mark levinson company, which has a reputation for designing top-quality audio systems. It employs a seven-channel amplifier and nine speakers including an eight-inch subwoofer, cassette deck and six-disc cd changer in the dash. With digital signal processing (dsp) and automatic sound leveling (asl), the complex equipment turns the cockpit of the sc 430 into a mobile sound box. Press it and side windows dip, a trunk flap rises and the lid quickly folds in half and slips into recesses of the trunk, then the flap closes and windows descend into the doors. driving impressionengineers who developed the sc 430 managed to blend classic structural and mechanical ingredients that foster aggressive performance and playful agility within the context of lexus sophistication and supreme personal luxury. It can rip down a straightaway at an illicit pace, but also cut through a mess of off-camber mountain curves with the dexterity of an athletic sports car.  we surfed along beach boulevards around san diego in convertible mode with the stereo cranked high and a california sun baking leather seats. The only thing missing from the drop-top ride was a wind-battered hairdo, as the aerodynamic engineers at lexus somehow managed to deflect the air flow away from the cockpit. 2013 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Coupe and five-door hatch join sedan lineup. introductionone of the best compact cars on the market, the 2013 hyundai elantra continues to be a winning combination of compelling styling, able performance and interior comfort. With unique styling cues and driving characteristics, the elantra coupe and elantra gt are positioned as sporty alternatives to the traditional sedan.  the elantra coupe is fun yet practical, and fits between the elantra sedan and the more enthusiast-oriented genesis coupe. A v-beam rear suspension, instead of the torsion beam found on the sedan, gives the coupe and gt a firmer, more planted feel, and helps to reduce body roll around corners. Suspensions are tuned differently between models with standard 16-inch and optional 17-inch wheels, with the larger wheels receiving an even sportier treatment. Although the base 2013 elantra gls model starts at more than $1,000 over the 2012 model, it gets more standard features including air conditioning, a telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, and 16-inch (instead of 15-inch) wheels. On gls models equipped with the automatic transmission, heated front seats are included with the optional preferred package.  we found all elantra variants enjoyable to drive. The sedan's smooth ride and responsive handling make for a plush, but not numb, driving experience. The coupe and gt models feel more connected to the road, without sacrificing road-trip comfort.  inside, the elantra sedan is roomy all around, especially by compact standards, with interior measurements comparable to those of a small midsize car. The coupe and gt, however, suffer from a lack of rear headroom due to the steeper rake of their rooflines. Like most compacts, elantra is front-wheel drive. Using lighter materials such as aluminum and plastic on engine parts helps to keep the elantra family relatively lightweight, around 2,700 pound for the coupe and a bit more for the gt. The sedan weighs in at around 2,900 pounds, which is good for a compact sedan. These lower curb weights help elantra achieve solid performance and excellent fuel economy.  epa ratings for all elantra variants are some of the most competitive in the industry. Sedans are rated at 28/38 mpg city/highway with both manual and automatic transmissions. That's better than the ford focus (26/36 mpg), chevrolet cruze (26/36 mpg), or honda civic (28/36 mpg). The elantra coupe is epa-rated at 29/40 mpg with the manual and 28/39 mpg city/highway with the automatic. The elantra coupe takes on the honda civic coupe and the kia forte koup, along with larger, more expensive two-doors such as the honda accord. All seat five.  elantra gls sedan 16,695) comes standard with the 6-speed manual transmission, cloth upholstery, six-way manual driver's seat, manually operated air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, six-speaker audio system with cd player, satellite radio capability and ipod/usb port; 60/40-split folding rear seat, power windows, locks and heated mirrors, tilt steering wheel, keyless entry, anti-theft system, trip computer, and 16-inch steel wheels. The automatic transmission 1,000) is optional. A preferred package 750) is available on gls models equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission that includes heated front seats, cloth inserts on the door trim, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, sliding center armrest, bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition, additional interior lighting, fog lights and alloy wheels.  elantra limited sedan 20,945) comes only with the automatic transmission and includes leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, leather-wrapped wheel and shift knob, air conditioning, minor cabin upgrades, power sunroof, fog lights, mirror-imbedded turn signals, black chrome grille, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The limited technology package 2,350) adds pushbutton start, dual automatic climate control, navigation with 7-inch screen, rearview camera, 360-watt premium audio system and automatic headlights.  elantra coupe gs 17,445) includes heated front seats, air conditioning, power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, steering-wheel mounted controls, sliding center arm rest, 60/40 split folding rear seats, a 6-speaker audio system with cd player, satellite radio capability, auxiliary jack and an ipod/usb port; fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels. The automatic transmission is optional 1,000).  elantra coupe se 19,745) adds leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a one-touch-up driver's window, aluminum pedals, sport-tuned suspension, power sunroof, a hood insulator, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a rear spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels. The automatic transmission is optional 1,000). The elantra coupe se can also be equipped with the technology package 23,095) which includes the automatic transmission and everything found on the se trim plus dual automatic climate control, navigation with 7-inch screen, upgraded 360-watt audio system, rearview camera and automatic headlights.  elantra gt five-door 18,395) comes standard with manual gearbox, air conditioning, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated front seats, cooled glove compartment, power accessories, cruise control, steering-wheel-mounted controls, 60/40 split folding rear seats, bluetooth handsfree phone connectivity, a 6-speaker audio system with cd player, satellite radio capability, auxiliary jack and ipod/usb port; hyundai's blue link telematics system, front fog lights, rear window wiper, rear spoiler, hood insulator and 16-inch alloy wheels. Elantra gt models equipped with the style package 21,145) get leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a power driver's seat with power lumbar, aluminum pedals, a driver's side auto-up window, panoramic sunroof, sport-tuned suspension, side mirrors with integrated turn signals and 17-inch alloy wheels. The elantra gt with the tech package 23,495) includes navigation, dual automatic climate control, pushbutton start, a rearview camera and automatic headlights. The automatic transmission is optional 1,000).  safety features on all models include front, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and electronic stability control with vehicle stability control, antilock brakes, brake assist, and traction control. Gt models get a standard driver's knee airbag. The optional rearview camera improves safety by helping the driver spot children and pedestrians when backing up. walkaroundthe hyundai elantra sedan looks striking with crisp, edgy styling. Most of the rest of the class looks dated by comparison. Viewed from the front, the hexagonal grille presents a more sinister grin than that of the mazda 3. The headlight housings wrap into the fenders, the trailing edge back as far as the centerline of the front wheels. The tail lights are long, wavy wraparound fixtures echoing the curves that lead in to the rear bumper and promote airflow to help keep the lights clean; on a dirty road surface the license plate should be the first part shrouded in muck.  the elantra coupe has a sleeker, wedgier shape, without infringing too much on genesis coupe territory. In front, the wide-mouth hexagonal grille is framed by more swept-back headlamps, while the side view reveals more angular a- and c-pillars. Because the coupe is still decently sized, its doors are awfully long, which is most noticeable when getting in and out in tight parking quarters. In back, the integrated spoiler, wraparound taillights and dual ch. 2006 honda odyssey review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth and responsive. introductionthe honda odyssey has been a bestseller ever since the second generation was introduced in 1999. When the all-new third generation was introduced as a 2005 model, honda showed it wasn't resting on its laurels. Power door locks with remote keyless entry, power windows, and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats come standard.  the ex 28,395) adds power sliding doors, tri-zone climate control, a stowable second-row plusone seat, in-dash cd changer, steering wheel audio controls, power driver seat controls, alloy wheels and other features. It has a slightly stiffer suspension, run-flat tires, front and rear parking sensors, automatic tri-zone climate control, a power tailgate, power-adjustable pedals, an upgraded sound system, 17 cupholders, and all the features found in the ex with leather. That's stretching it a bit, though it looks curvy in profile and there is a similarity to the accord in the front end.  large headlights flank its big grille. The hood is sculptured with curves that lead naturally back to the windshield and emphasize the big fender flares. Honda has not hidden the sliding door channels at the base of the window but left them partially obscured by a crease that runs the length of the vehicle.  all models come with two sliding doors, manually operated on the lx and electrically operated on all other models. The power windows in each of the side doors can be opened in the same fashion as in a car. The power doors seemed a bit reluctant to operate at times, less responsive to key fob commands than toyota's sliding doors.  the odyssey boasts honda's advanced compatibility engineering (ace) body structure. The vehicle's crush zones have been re-engineered to provide better protection for occupants while lessening damage when hitting other smaller vehicles and pedestrians. Its body structure is rigid, a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. A low drag coefficient helps improve fuel economy and high-speed stability. interiorinside, the honda odyssey is comfortable and convenient. It feels downright luxurious when ordered with leather trim. The materials are nice and the metallic-colored trim that runs across the center dash is attractive.  the driver's seat is designed to hold the driver more firmly and is positioned in a car-like setting. The shift lever is mounted on the dashboard; it looks odd at first, but it's easier to use than a column-mounted shifter. A handy drink tray is provided between the front seats, but there's no center console.  the second-row bucket seats are comfortable.  the third-row seat is split 60/40 and folds easily into the well provided for it, and the headrests do not need to be removed before folding.  there's room for eight people with the optional plusone seat that fits between the two captain's chairs in the second row. If it's not needed as a seat it can be turned into a table or stowed in the floor in place of the lazy susan bin. If the plusone seat is not being used, the right-hand seat can be slid across to allow easier access to the third-row seats. This flexibility makes the odyssey a versatile people hauler, but it's not the best in the class for hauling cargo.  the optional voice-activated dvd navigation system includes zagat restaurant data. The large eight-inch monitor is positioned high on the dashboard for easy viewing. The voice-activated system responds to 637 commands and is smart enough to understand different accents and find locations without any need for input other than by voice. Apart from navigation, the system can be used to operate the radio and climate controls. We found the system responds effectively to voice commands.  the available dvd entertainment system features a large nine-inch widescreen display that folds out of the ceiling. The wireless headsets turn on and off automatically as the ear pads are rotated. No, it's not for serving food, but for adding an incredibly useful hidden storage area. The previous odyssey had a storage well under the floor of the front seats for the spare tire. Honda engineers have moved the spare to a location in the rear. Instead of removing the round space under the floor where the spare used to reside they've turned it into a hidden storage compartment with a rotating compartmentalized bin. There's a small access panel in the floor between the two front seats for front passengers to get access and another bigger one in front of the center-row seats for access. So whatever stuff is stowed in the lazy susan, front or middle-row passengers can turn it for access. Honda's goal with this latest-generation model was to produce a minivan with the handling of a european sedan.  the odyssey belies its size on the road and handles like a premium sedan. We found its handling and ride pleasant for long drives as well as around town.  during a test drive along country roads near the honda factory in alabama, we found the odyssey offered a perfectly pleasant ride. It was neither too firm nor too soft. Granted, there is some road vibration. It was no worse than in a chrysler town & country, however, and many people will not notice as it's a common trait of many large cars and most suvs. All in all, it's an ideal vehicle for a long-distance drive.  several laps around a race track showed the odyssey to be stable at high speeds. And we were surprised how much we could chuck it into corners. We found we could drive hard enough into a sharp corner to feel the tires slip without any drama. We could not feel much body roll (lean) in corners, and an odyssey lapping in front of us looked remarkably stable for a tall vehicle.  parking is easy. The turning radius is among the tightest of any minivan, making it an easy to make u-turns and maneuver in parking lots. The park-assist system, with beeping tones that warn the driver of other bumpers front and rear, helps considerably when parallel parking.  straight-line acceleration is good, better than other minivans. Yet despite having 244 horsepower going through the front wheels, the odyssey is almost devoid of any torque steer.  the odyssey's 3. 5-liter v6 engine is smooth, powerful, clean and fuel efficient. Both versions of the v6 generate the same amount of power: 244 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque (though the ivtec generates its peak torque at 4500 rpm vs. 5000 rpm for the vtec). If it looks like horsepower figures are lower for 2006, it's due to a change in how the society of automotive engineers tests engines. No change has actually been made to the engines.  the brakes work well. Every odyssey comes with anti-lock brakes (abs) and vehicle stability assist, honda's electronic stability control system. This system works in conjunction with the drive-by-wire accelerator and abs to modulate the brakes while managing the throttle and ignition. If the vehicle starts to lose grip on a tight turn on a slippery surface, the system automatically slows the engine and gently applies brakes to stop the vehicle from skidding out of control. In a test on a soaking skid pad we found the system works well. Fortunately it only works in emergency situations so it's not distracting during normal spirited driving. It can be turned off, though we recom.

2004 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Recently redesigned, now with a turbo option. introductionthere used to be a poster of ted turner wearing cowboy boots and a charming cocky grin, saying, 'i was country before country was cool.' the subaru forester could borrow that expression and say, 'i was crossover before crossover was cool.'  the forester may have invented that style of semi-suv in 1998, before the word came along. Now the new crossover vehicles are finding their own identities, including higher performance, but the forester isn't letting them get away.  the new 2004 subaru forester 2. 5 xt (t for turbo) brings 210 horsepower to the table and a dazzling 235 pounds-feet of torque for exhilarating acceleration performance.  the rest of the forester line continues to offer reliability, fuel efficiency, cargo room, safety, and its time-tested all-wheel-drive system. Extensively revised for 2003, the second-generation forester is roomier and more upscale than before. It has comfortable, highly supportive seats. It's a better vehicle on treacherous roads than an suv. lineupthe 2004 subaru forester comes in three versions: the basic 2. 5 x 20,895), the well-equipped 2. 5 xs 23,145), and the new high-performance 2. 5 xt 24,970). The x and the xs produce 165 horsepower and 166 pounds-feet of torque, while the turbocharged xt raises the level to 210 and 235.  standard features include a 80-watt stereo with cd player, remote keyless entry system, 16-inch sport wheels, variable intermittent windshield wipers and a trailer harness connector.  the 2. 5 xs adds automatic climate control, electronic brake force distribution (ebd), lower body cladding, leather accents and a six-disc cd changer. All subarus come with all-wheel drive. A limited-slip rear differential is optional. Also available are heated front seats and exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer.  safety features include abs and pedals that give way in a crash, reducing leg and foot injuries. The airbag system is extensive, including front airbags with dual stages for the passenger, and side-impact airbags in the front. A supporter of tread lightly! It's relatively small, noticeable when parked alongside a mid-size suv like an explorer. It's boxy, as is any such car that uses space so efficiently. There's 7. 5 inches of ground clearance, under a large molded front 5-mph bumper with integrated fog lights and a horizontal air intake at the bottom. The standard roof rack with cross rails is flat black, and the body cladding comes mostly in different shades and textures of gray on different models, but the higher-priced monotone looks best because it doesn't add clutter to the car's shape.  the aluminum hood is sculpted with a slight wide bulge, and the front and rear quarter panels have sculpted lines that flow rearward, and would be more effective without the cladding. The rt features good-looking alloy wheels, called six-spoke but actually 12 as the spokes are grouped in twos.  the vertically triangular taillights frame a large hexagonal rear gate with a lot of glass for good visibility, and which opens with an easy touch. interiorthe seating position is high despite the fact that the forester isn't a tall vehicle. This is nice, in the non-suv department. The optional leather interior looks and feels stylish, and, not surprisingly, the instrument panel and controls are well and efficiently designed, using what subaru calls a motorcycle-style instrument cluster. The driver's seat is highly adjustable and provides good bolstering, while the adjustable steering wheel has excellent range. The driver is afforded panoramic visibility from the big windshield, big side glass, and thin a-pillars. A wide rearview mirror and big outside mirrors provide a good view rearward. The wiper blades are designed to sweep a large area of the windshield clean.  rear-seat passengers get good head and leg room. It earned the highest possible ratings for crashworthiness in 40-mph frontal and 30-mph side impact crash tests by the insurance institute for highway safety, the only small suv to earn that rating in both tests.  the interior materials are nice, though the top of the dash looks like plastic. Three big hvac knobs make it easy to adjust the temperature. The audio controls are on the fussy side, however, and the stereo sounds tinny.  standard features include remote keyless entry, good storage space in the console, a separate storage compartment for the front passenger seat, dual visor vanity mirrors with lids, dual sunglasses storage compartments, illuminated window switches, rear window de-icer, remote release fuel door, two 12-volt outlets located in the front cabin and the cargo area, tie-downs for gear and groceries, power windows and locks, and finally a full-size spare tire. driving impressionthe subaru forester is more fun to drive than any sport-utility vehicle and will run circles around them. It handles like a car and can be driven like one. Subaru's variable valve timing system helps too. One drawback to the xt is its lower fuel mileage of 18/23 mpg epa city/highway with the five-speed, compared to the xs model's 21/27. And the xt requires 91 octane fuel.  the standard engine delivers good acceleration, though it doesn't match the exhilaration of the turbo. Subaru's horizontally opposed engine structure (called a 'boxer') is similar in concept to porsche's. Though powerful, subaru's engine isn't as smooth as some.  the five-speed manual transmission works well, though it feels a ropey and has a long throw. The ride is relatively firm due to the short 99-inch wheelbase. Equal-length axle shafts help eliminate torque steer. Underneath the skin, forester's new body structure is strong and light, further improving handling and reducing stopping distances.  the cabin is quiet, even at triple-digit speeds, as we learned on the high-banked oval at talladega motor speedway. Newly designed suspension struts help reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Believe it or not, the forester is aerodynamic, achieving a 0. 36 coefficient of drag. That helps reduce wind noise and improves fuel economy.  the brakes are excellent. We didn't experience any fade while braking hard for the first infield turn off of the oval lap after lap.  later, we tested xs at mudfest near seattle, the northwest automotive press writers' annual event for new and redesigned suvs. There were more than 30 suvs of all sizes there, and the forester xs was the hands-down winner in the slalom. It felt like a sports car as it weaved through the cones at more than 40 mph, when some of the. Climate Control✔ Power Windows✔ CD Changer✔ CD Player✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels

2003 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New design brings more room, better handling. introductionextensively revised for 2003, the second-generation subaru forester adds sports appeal and improved handling. The new forester is roomier than before and comes with new features that move its image slightly upscale. Yet it still combines fuel efficiency, cargo room, safety, and the foul-weather advantages of all-wheel drive.  introduced in the 1998 model year, the forester mini-suv soon became a household word. Subaru's answer to the honda cr-v and toyota rav4 carved a niche and achieved respectable sales. The forester looked more rugged than subaru's impreza sedan and less like a wagon than the outback. Although subaru has sold the best-selling imported wagon in the u. For nearly 20 years, the brand has not been easily categorized. The forester attempts to combine the best of both worlds. It works well as a grocery getter, and excels as a backcountry runabout for family camping trips. The transmissions operate with two different all-wheel-drive systems: manual transmissions use what subaru calls continuous all-wheel drive; automatic transmissions use active all-wheel drive.  new standard features include a 100-watt stereo with cd player, remote keyless entry system, 16-inch sport wheels and variable intermittent windshield wipers. Upgraded standard safety features include a dual-stage deployment front passenger airbag, front-seat head/chest side-impact airbags, active front-seat head restraints, and pretensioners and force limiters on the front seatbelts. An optional xs premium package includes monotone exterior trim and body cladding, a power moonroof and optional leather upholstery with automatic transmission models. An all-weather package is also available. walkaroundsubaru forester has undergone a headlamp-to-tailpipe upgrade for the 2003 model year. A sculpted new aluminum hood improves sightlines for the driver, while reducing weight for improved handling.  the rear is significantly changed, with a unique hexagonal rear gate framed by triangular taillights and blister type rear quarter panels. The rear gate opening size is increased to aid with stowage of gear, and the effort it takes to close the gate has been reduced by 30 percent. Textured gray body cladding encases the lower third of base 2. 5x versions. The cladding is a contrasting steel gray metallic on 2. 5xs models, which come with larger gray metallic foldable, heated exterior mirrors. Bumpers have been designed to absorb impact up to 5 mph for reduced damage during parking lot dings.  forester has a bevy of available factory-installed accessories that add to its versatility. A supporter of tread lightly! A trailer harness connector comes standard. interiorin both trim levels, the new forester adds increased comfort and functionality. A high seating point and adjustable driver's seat are aimed at improving visibility, with improved front seat bolstering and additional for/aft adjustment that increases seat travel. The driver's seat has increased height adjustment and the range of the tilt-adjustable steering column has been improved, as well. Back seat passengers get more leg and head room, with no reduction of cargo volume.  remote keyless entry is standard. Also new are a 100-watt weatherband am/fm/cd stereo, a motorcycle-style instrument cluster (shared with the impreza series), a passenger-side stowage compartment, dual visor vanity mirrors with lids, dual sunglasses storage compartments, illuminated window switches on all doors, a rear window deicer and a remote release fuel door. Wiper blades are now larger, as is the swipe area to improve visibility in inclement weather. The inside rear view mirror is larger for improved visibility to the rear. And the rear wiper now wipes the high-mount stop lamp to keep it clear and more visible in bad weather.  new passive safety features include active front seat head restraints and assist grips for all seating positions. A middle rear seat headrest tucks in for improved driver visibility. Three-point safety belts are standard for all five seats. Child-seat tether anchors are included.  forester's cargo area is average at 32. 0 cubic feet but expands to 63. 1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. Two 12-volt outlets are included, in the front cabin and the stowage area, and tie-downs for gear and groceries are standard. Additional stowage areas are provided in the center console. Power windows and locks are standard, as is a full-size spare tire.  the higher-end xs adds leather accents and a six-disc cd changer.  . driving impressionnot long ago, the notion of driving an suv or crossover vehicle on a race track was preposterous or, at the very least, boring. Bumped up it is, but not in the league of these more sophisticated (and more costly) models.  putting the forester to the test at talladega, a superspeedway outside birmingham, alabama, i approached the five-story banking with caution and excitement. Easing the subaru forester's throttle on to full power, i climbed to the top of the 33-degree grade and was quickly traveling at a speed of 100 mph. Level ground was a long way away and a sharp angle to my current path of travel, and looking down gave me a feeling of vertigo. However, the feedback that i got from this crossover suv let me know that there was plenty of grip and good balance, and assured me that its speed and precarious perch were within reason in this controlled environment. Larger front brake rotors have been added to reduce stopping distances.  here, i also found quick throttle response, as well as quick and easy gear shifts. Underneath the skin, forester has a stronger, yet lighter, body structure, which helps reduce the weight of this year's model by almost 100 pounds. In theory, lighter is better because it results in better handling and shorter stopping distances. A rigid chassis is a key element to responsive handling and a quiet ride. The forester boasts an impressive 7. 5-inches of ground clearance. Blocks of wood and other rough materials had been thrown down for us to drive on. The ride was surprisingly comfortable, a benefit of the forester's upgraded suspension.  following the track time, we took a 100-mile-long drive through the talladega national forest and the motorways surrounding the birmingham area. 2012 toyota yaris review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Redesigned, with more cargo space, better cornering. introductionthe toyota yaris has been completely redesigned for 2012. The front seats are as sporty and comfortable as any we've found in that class, and feature toyota's advanced whiplash injury-lessening (wil) design, supporting the upper body from head to lower back. Like all new cars nowadays, the new body uses an impact-absorbing structure with high-strength steel to better distribute collision forces.  the wheelbase is 98. 8 inches, a fraction longer than the ford fiesta, honda civic and mazda 2, but a fraction shorter than the chevy sonic; however its length is inches less than those cars. The yaris is called a five-seater, but don't count on it.  the 2012 toyota yaris comes as a 3-door or 5-door liftback. A sedan version is not available. After decades, it seems the eminently practical hatchback/liftback body style is starting to prevail over the smoother looking but less functional compact sedan.  yaris comes in three trims: l, le, and se (5-door only). The yaris l and sport-tuned yaris se come standard with a tight 5-speed gearbox, while a new 4-speed automatic transmission is optional; yaris le only comes with the new automatic, which is compact, lightweight, and lower friction.  standard equipment in all models has been increased, and options are reduced to make buying simpler. Suspension changes in the 2012 yaris include re-tuned front macpherson struts and rear torsion beam, for a better ride and tighter corning; this is an improvement we could feel, and applaud. Its front disc brakes are larger, and it's fitted with alloy wheels and wider profile p195/50/r16 tires.  standard safety equipment includes frontal dual-stage airbags, front-seat mounted side airbags, driver's knee airbag, and roll-sensing airbag curtains front and rear. Yaris features toyota's star safety system, including stability control, traction control, abs with ebd, and brake assist. Standard equipment includes smart stop technology, toyota's system that defaults to the brakes when both brake and gas pedal are pushed. Yaris l 5-door liftback comes only with the automatic 15,140).  all yaris models come well equipped, with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power door locks, six cup and bottle holders, am/fm/cd player with mp3 and wma playback, usb and auxiliary ports, cargo storage cover, electric power steering, ventilated front disc brakes, cold weather package, halogen headlights, intermittent wipers, and 15-inch steel wheels. Power windows and cruise control are not standard.  yaris le 3-door 15,480) and yaris le 5-door 15,960) come standard with the automatic transmission, adding power windows, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, steering wheel audio controls, and audio system with hd radio, six speakers and bluetooth music streaming technology. Cruise control is optional.  yaris se 5-door comes with the 5-speed gearbox 16,300) or 4-speed automatic 17,100). Yaris se features a sport-tuned suspension, quicker steering ratio, bigger front disc brakes, rear disc brakes, and p195/50r16 tires and alloy wheels. It adds smoke-trim multi-reflector halogen headlamps, integrated fog lamps, color-keyed grille with sport mesh insert, front and rear underbody spoilers, rear spoiler and diffuser, and chrome-tipped exhaust. Inside, there are sport seats and sporty instrumentation, with analog speedometer and tachometer, and digital display. A leather-trimmed three-spoke tilting steering wheel includes audio controls and standard cruise control. It's longer, lower and wider, which might begin to change the yaris image. Especially the se, which has wider tires, alloy wheels, spoilers and diffusers, and body-colored touches.  its new aggressive stance comes from a bold nose and head-on view, with wide headlamps having integrated turn signals. The side profile shows a steep beltline and curving shoulders that flow to the rear.  the yaris now comes in eight colors, including super white, classic silver metallic, magnetic gray metallic, black sand pearl, absolutely red, lagoon blue mica, wave line pearl and blazing blue pearl. The car's lines are now cool enough that in black or gray metallic, it actually looks powerful, in a subcompact sort of way. interiorwe love the sport seats in the yaris se. The new high-quality fabric is rugged and the fit is all-around excellent. The yaris chassis and ride feel solid, and we think the seats have a lot to do with this. But it would feel solid anyhow.  there's decent room in the rear for a subcompact, with 33. 3 inches of legroom. The rear bench seat in the l model folds flat with one knob, while the le and se models have a 60/40 split folding rear seat. The dashboard is pleasing, and toyota has moved the speedometer to in front of the driver where it belongs; the previous yaris located the speedo in the center of the dashboard, so the structure could be used in right-hand-drive cars, to reduce cost.  there's a nice, small tachometer to the left of the speedo, which has good clear numbers with a digital window showing time, temp, odo, twin trip meters, clock, fuel mileage, and average speed. The instrument lighting glows red and cool at night. The shift knob and thick steering wheel grip feel good in the dark. It's a new three-spoke, with a flat bottom to stay out of the way of a driver's knees when climbing in and out.  cabin conveniences are especially important in a subcompact, and the yaris has good ones. Climate control knobs are as simple and easy as they come. It's got a roomy glovebox, six cup and bottle holders, door pockets, and cubbies near the shift lever, although no center console between the seats, where the emergency brake lever is located. There's good legroom in front, 40. 6 inches.  but we wonder what happened to toyota's thinking, with the radio/sound system. Music mode or talk mode appears, that's all it does. Spin and nothing happens. We found it frustrating. What's more, the reception was lousy. Twenty miles outside the city limits, and we couldn't get the biggest fm station in portland.  back to the upside. Great, safe, high beams with the standard halogen headlamps. A terrific one-arm windshield wiper that sprays fluid directly onto the path of the blade.  finally, one of the most important things: the yaris is quiet inside. The engine isn't buzzy, and there's tons of new sound insulation. The doors close with a healthy thunk. driving impressionwe got a chance to drive the yaris in the snow, and it performed well. Better traction than we expected up a steep slippery street, and down that same street, the anti-lock brakes delivered security.  actually, secure might be the best single word to describe the overall feeling. The toyota yaris feels way solid. It's not big on the outside, but its roominess on the inside contributes to the solid feeling. It's not as quick and sporty feeling as the lightweight mazda2 or the ford fiesta, and.

2014 kia forte review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger and better compact. introductionkia forte is all-new for 2014. While the size of vehicles (and their impact on the environment) shrinks in response to consumers' changing needs, the expectation now is of elevated levels of equipment, sophistication and elegance. This explains kia's accelerated development cycle on its forte model. This new fifth generation, 2014 forte has come out just three-and-a-half years after the appearance of its predecessor. When that car emerged, the marketplace was not as thronged with comprehensively equipped, stylish offerings as it is now, so the new forte's timing could not be better. The turbocharged 1. 6-liter engine is exclusively available on the forte sx 5-door.  forte 5-door also features a sport-tuned suspension.  many of the essential items like abs, air conditioning, bluetooth, satellite radio and kia's comprehensive safety equipment are standard on all models. The technology package adds hid headlights, led tail lights, a 4. 2-inch color lcd cluster screen and dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation. walkaroundthe new 2014 kia forte has a crisply chiseled shape sitting on a wheelbase some two inches longer than the previous car. Kia describes the front end as having a winged bumper shape between the distinctive kia grille and the underbumper intake, which shares the grille's mesh pattern. Headlamp enclosures are flared into the bodywork like streamliner canopies, and they showcase projector low-beam lamps on all models.  the windshield and a-pillars are set at a sporty rake, calling for small front quarterlites that match, in turn, rear versions necessitated by the car's fast roofline. Body color is used on doorhandles and mirrors, while a chrome beltline garnish emphasizes the glasshouse's wedge profile, lending the forte's profile a strong cab-forward visual sense.  an extreme rear window rake and generous deck height provide a distinctly european flavor to the rear aspect of the sedan. Any chunkiness is relieved by the asymmetrical tail-light shapes and underbumper diffuser, and the lights themselves have 81 leds for a conspicuous night-time presence. The trunk opening is two inches wider for easier use.  while one might see the design as euro-derived, it is nonetheless attractive, tidy and balanced. We have yet to see the 15-inch wheels on the forte, but the aggressively patterned 16-inch alloys fill their apertures in a pleasing fashion.  less obvious are the underbody tweaks that company officials say have helped the forte achieve a slippery drag coefficient of 0. 27.  as on the sedan, the forte 5-door's swept headlights stretch deep into the front fenders and the raked windshield and broad shoulders give the front end a sleek, sporty appearance. Led positioning lights add a premium look to the front fascia. Large 18-inch wheels fill the wheel wells on the sx, and the hatchback profile affords a performance-oriented european personality. Around back, the rear hatch glass opens to reveal 23. 2 cubic feet of usable cargo space. Led tail lights complete the premium feel of the exterior and a sporty rear valance with twin chrome exhaust tips maintains the forte 5-door's edgy demeanor. interiorinterior ambiance is one of the big challenges facing compact cars. Consumers can easily adapt to smaller exterior dimensions, but they will notice cheesy interior details for the life of the car. Angled 10-degrees toward the driver for a more-intimate interface, the center console is clean and uncluttered.  the instruments themselves are large and bright, and the various control buttons have a pleasing sense to their operation. Much of the molded surface is coated in a nano paint treatment which is slightly rubbery to the touch, mitigating the usual criticisms about hard moldings.  considerable detail abounds in the door panels, where distinct concavities house the armrests and window controls. Torsional rigidity is up by 37 percent, according to kia. Careful control of noise and vibration has produced a car with refinement that seems well above its spot on the pricelist. Shift-shock is all but absent in the forte, and it's difficult even to confuse the transmission with sudden throttle movements. There's a manual override shift system in the new forte, and it surprised us by holding the gear selected even when the throttle was quickly floored. It is a competent, comfortable, roomy and well-equipped compact sedan. If it has been tuned to a sweet spot in the marketplace that prefers a composed and convenient car rather than a taut, close-focused attack tool, more power to kia. 2010 mazda mazda3 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Re-engineered premium car at compact price. introductionthe 2010 mazda 3 is a premium car in a compact package. It gets new styling inside and out, a larger, more powerful engine, new transmissions, and even more luxury and technology amenities than the generous helping it offered before. It hasn't been completely redesigned, however. It keeps the same basic architecture, with some upgrades. Introduced for the 2004 model year, mazda calls the 2010 mazda3 an evolution, not a revolution of the previous model. Built on a volvo platform, the previous mazda3 was a sales and critical success for mazda. With that in mind, mazda hasn't radically changed anything on its sales leader. Instead, the company set out to make incremental improvements.  inside, the mazda3 adds bluetooth cell phone connectivity, a bose centerpoint surround system, and an available multi-information display that adds a second level of information. The interior is first-class interior with lots of other available amenities. Higher line models get a multi-information display below the windshield that houses readouts for the vehicle information center, climate system, radio presets, and even the available navigation system. A unique cluster of buttons on the steering wheel controls these functions. The readouts are easy to see and the steering wheel controls work intuitively. It's a pretty trick setup. The other controls are mounted high on the dash's center stack, and are also easy to see and use.  the mazda3 is practical, with useful small items storage up front, as well as plenty of room for the front passengers. The back seat will fit two adults fairly comfortably, provided the front occupants aren't too tall. In both the sedan and hatchback, the rear seats fold 60/40 to create a mostly flat load floor. The result is a sporty car that feels firm and composed on the road, with moderate lean in turns. The steering is sharp and precise, and the brakes provide a linear pedal feel. The suspension deals well with most bumps, though large ruts can pound through with the available 17-inch wheels.  two engines are offered. Sedans are offered as 2. 0-liter i and 2. 5-liter s models, while hatchbacks are only offered as s models. It is offered only with a manual transmission. The moonroof, 6cd and bose package 1395) includes a 10-speaker, 242-watt bose centerpoint surround sound system. The technology package 1195) comes with a navigation system, a full-color version of the multi-information display, sirius satellite radio with a six-month subscription, keyless access and starting, and a perimeter alarm.  safety features standard on all mazda3 models include dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, tire-pressure monitor, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. The styling was just right. No line seemed out of place. The 2010 model uses the same wheelbase as the previous version but it's three inches longer in overall length. Some of the lines on the 2010 model seem somewhat askew, most notably the front end's goofy smile.  the smile comes from a bold new grille. Whereas the last model had a small, high-set grille with a prominent lower air intake, the new model has only the grille, now much bigger and set lower. The five-point shape seen on other mazdas, including the restyled 2009 mx-5, creates the smiley face shape. Mazda says the new grille serves a purpose, making the mazda3 slip through the air better while also taking in sufficient air to cool the engine. The result is a polarizing look that we fear customers may dislike.  the rest of the car is an evolution of the last model and is quite attractive. The grille is flanked by a pair of angled headlights that wrap around to the sides. They're also adaptive, meaning that they point into turns as the steering wheel is turned. That's a pretty neat safety feature on dark country roads, both for the driver and pedestrians.  the headlights come to a point around the side of the car, where they meet up with prominent front wheel flares that surround 16 or 17-inch wheels. The base car gets steel wheels, but higher line models have attractive alloy wheels. The fender flares direct the eye to a rising beltline that starts at the front of the door, bisects the door handles, and leads all the way to the taillights. This line has a stronger wedge shape on the hatchback. On both body styles, another character line is found just above the rocker panel, and it rises as it moves toward the rear wheel. Like the outgoing model, the hatchback features triangular rear side windows and a rear roof spoiler.  at the rear, the sedan has a rear lip spoiler. The hatchback features a five-pointed rear window that reflects the shape of the grille. That platform worked quite well in the last (pre-2010) car, so mazda stuck with that winning formula but tweaked it to make it lighter and stiffer. This was accomplished by using more high-tensile strength steel and thicker steel in key locations, adding gussets to areas such as the suspension mounting points, and employing a technique called weld-bonding to strengthen areas such as the door apertures. Weld bonding, which combines spot welding with the use of structural adhesive, enhances the unibody's flex resistance. The result is an even better handling car. interiormuch of the mazda 3 appeal is the interior, which is first-class for a vehicle of this size and price. Mazda has completely redesigned the cockpit for 2010, taking an approach based on human-machine interface studies that places controls and readouts in two key zones.  controls most frequently used, including the radio and climate dials and buttons, are.

2003 honda cr-v review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy interior, agile handling make this an appealing car. introductionthe honda cr-v is roomy and convenient and easy to drive. It rides nice and smoothing, without the jouncy harshness of most suvs. It's surprisingly maneuverable in tight quarters and handles well on winding roads.  the cr-v has grown up. Literally: last year, a new model was launched that was larger, roomier, and more powerful than the first-generation model, and the new cr-v reclaimed its leading position in the compact sport-utility race.  along with the toyota rav4, the cr-v was one of the original cute-utes: not quite a sport-utility, but more than a car, offering an upright seating position, all-wheel drive and decent cargo space. Since it was built on a car platform (the honda civic), its highway-friendly ride and handling made it drive more like a car. That was in mid-1997.  since then the field has become crowded with competitors, including the ford escape, mazda tribute, and hyundai santa fe. The chevrolet tracker and suzuki vitara offered more truck-like engineering for better off-road capability. Land rover introduced its luxurious and highly capable freelander, while jeep launched its highly capable and slightly larger liberty.  with the 2002 model, however, the cr-v got back in the hunt. It still isn't any good off-road, but it's quite competent on the highways and byways where most of these vehicles are driven most of the time. The honda bests many of its immediate competitors in both qualitative and quantitative measures, while trailing in a few minor areas.  for 2003, honda has added coat hooks in the rear compartment and enlarged the front storage console to better accommodate cassettes and cds. Options are extremely limited; as honda firmly believes that the fewer the options, the less a car costs to build. It's available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  the base lx is well equipped for $19,360. With the automatic, the 4wd lx costs $20,560.  side-impact air bags add $250. It lists for $22,060 with the five-speed manual, $22,860 with the automatic. walkaroundthe cr-v is growing up. This latest version shows less activity in the body panels, suggesting a more robust persona. For lack of a better comparison, it's like a puppy that's filled out as it has grown up. interiorthe honda cr-v has a friendly interior that's easy to live with, convenient in the daily hustle. Getting in and out is quick and easy. For 2003, rear coat hooks have been added and the center console-mounted storage area has been enlarged to accommodate cds and cassettes.  gauges are easy to read, with white numerals on a black background, avoiding the twilight wash-out afflicting the black-on-white arrays that are the current fad. Cruise control is standard, as is an adjustable steering column.  the front seats are comfortable. In nearly every measure of interior room, the cr-v bests its competition. Only the toyota rav4 beats the cr-v's front seat headroom, and by less than half an inch. The ford escape and rav4 provide more front-seat leg room, by 0. 3 and 0. 9 inches, respectively, over the cr-v's still-generous 41. 3 inches.  likewise, the rear bench is comfortable with lots of room. The rear bench seat has three-point belts and head restraints at all three positions, something not all suvs offer.  in terms of cargo hauling, the cr-v is the undisputed champion, with 72. 0 cubic feet of cargo space. A picnic table in back does double duty as the cover for the spare tire bin. Everything else is where it should be, and there are no less than 21 storage bins adroitly spread about the cabin.  we really liked it the am/fm/cassette stereo with 6-disk in-dash cd changer. Honda does not provide a compass, however.  the parking brake is disguised, subtly integrated into the vertical panel forward of the center console. As odd as the placement might seem at first, over time it begins to make ergonomic sense. driving impressionthe honda cr-v rides well, whether the roads are smooth or rough. Through the miracles of valve timing, honda is able to generate lots of power while keeping fuel economy at an impressive epa-estimated 22/26 mpg city/highway. All cr-vs meet the new lev-ii low-emissions standards.  the cr-v's handling is reassuring. It feels sure-footed on twisting roads. The handling is neutral and the tires offer lots of grip in corners. The cr-v drives more like a car than a truck. That's because it is more car than truck. It's a car and that's a good thing.  the cr-v is more maneuverable in tight parking lots than a toyota rav4 or ford escape. That's a benefit of its tight turning radius (33. 8 feet for the cr-v verses 35. 4 feet for both the rav4 and escape).  in terms of crashworthiness, the cr-v rates highly. The cr-v earned 5-star ratings from the national highway traffic safety administration for both front and side impact, the highest rating possible. summarywith its expanded cargo and passenger volume and more mature styling, the latest honda cr-v has graduated to less cute, more ute. In the process, it has not only caught up to its competition, but passed most of it.  yes, a v6 would be nice, but it's not necessary, given the impressive torque output of the cr-v's inline-4. Most importantly, honda's reputation for quality and durability make the cr-v a top choice in the small-sport-ute field. model lineuplx 2wd 19,360) (rd6843pw); lx 4wd 19,760) (rd7743pw); and ex 4wd 22,060). assembled insayama, japan. options as testednone. model testedhonda cr-v 4wd ex automatic 22,860) (rd7883jw). 2008 scion xd review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new for 2008. introductionthe 2008 scion xd replaces the toyota division's cute, efficient xa. Scion's grand plan is to offer new models frequently, so it was time for the xa to go. While the xd is all new, shoppers can think of it as the second generation of the xa. We think it has lost some of the distinctiveness of the xa, but the xd can be dressed up into a unique, good-looking car, and that remains part of the scion plan. It has a longer wheelbase and wider track yet virtually the same overall length as the xa; that means shorter overhangs for a sportier appearance suggesting more agile handling. With a 1. 8-liter engine making 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, the xd is substantially more powerful than the 1. 5-liter xa model it replaces (by 20 hp). The new xd's engine also benefits from the latest version of toyota's vvt-i, or variable valve timing, technology for strong power and good fuel economy.  the xd comes well equipped, with air conditioning, a high-watt pioneer stereo and a full complement of power accessories.  the xd sets the class benchmark for safety equipment. Front, side and curtain-style airbags are standard, as is a sophisticated anti-lock brake system. The xd is available with optional electronic stability control, which isn't even offered on most cars in its class.  in some respects, however, the xd falls short of the xa it replaces. The xd is heavier than the xa, by 300 pounds, so acceleration is diminished, particularly with the automatic transmission. Also, epa-estimated fuel economy ratings are poorer, but that's complicated by the epa's new testing methods for 2008 models which degrade on paper fuel economy for most cars. The xd is rated at 27/33 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission. And despite its slightly larger exterior dimensions, the xd provides less interior space than the old xa did, and less than key competitors such as the honda fit. The new rear seat is particularly handy. It reclines, slides fore and aft to maximize passenger or cargo room, or quickly folds totally flat, creating an excellent cargo space measuring a maximum 35. 7 cubic feet.  the xd's overall performance is spry. Ride quality is acceptable in most circumstances, and while it isn't the sportiest performer in its class, it can be fun to drive. We recommend the five-speed manual transmission, because the weakest link in the xd package is the optional automatic. Speed and style parts are available from trd (toyota racing development). And aftermarket suppliers are supporting the scion xd with a wide range of products, ranging from an supercharger to carbon-fiber body trim.  safety features include dual-stage front airbags, front passenger side-impact airbags and curtain-style head protection airbags front and rear. A tire-pressure monitor is standard. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. As noted, vsc electronic stability control with traction control is optional, but many competitors in this class, including the honda fit, do not offer electronic stability control. walkaroundthe scion xd is essentially the same size as the honda fit, its most obvious competitor. It's quite a bit smaller than the nissan versa and dodge caliber.  the xd is only half an inch longer than the old scion xa, on a wheelbase that's 3. 5 inches longer. That means shorter overhangs, engineering that should result in a better ride and more room inside.  we're a bit disappointed with the styling, and the more generic look scion is taking across its new line. The new xd looks too much like the new xb. The old xa was a sporty little thing and the old xb was a unique box; now the xd and xb are each sort of a blended box. Its fender flares have lost some of the xa's smooth shapeliness, and its hood is longer and quite bulbous, in place of the xa's cool steep slope from the top of the windshield to the front bumper. The halogen headlights are sleek, but they're pinched in a shape at odds with the roundness of the hood, which has a chrome scion emblem stuck on the front.  the standard steel wheels measure 16 inches in diameter, and the wheelwell gaps have been tightened, which is good. But none of the three wheelcover styles do much for the car. A sharp set of wheels goes a long way toward bringing the xd alive, and that's part of scion's personalization platform. We've seen xds with the six-spoke, 18-inch polished alloy wheels available from scion dealerships, and they totally change the bulky looks of the car. The 17-inch black alloys look great too, and those who don't want to spring for new tires can choose 16-inch alloys. With wheels and a rear spoiler to extend the lines of the roof, the xd looks more like something worth showing off. interiorscion has dared to be different, by its own edict, and that's obvious from the driver's seat of the 2008 scion xd. The aesthetic appeal lies more in the interior's unconventional elements rather than clean, elegant design, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. From the functional perspective, the xd interior works well, with only a couple of things worth complaining about.  materials used inside the xd are generally good for a car in this price range. The expansive plastic that covers the dash and door panels has a woven-grain, matte finish, and it's more appealing than the glossy hard stuff in some inexpensive cars. The shiny black plastic trim pieces look like piano lacquer, and better than fake wood or metal.  the seats are covered in dark charcoal fabric and are quite handsome, especially when compared to the cloth that comes with some other cars in this class. The upholstery isn't plush, but it feels sturdy. The front seats are firm but not too firm, and provide decent bolstering, which is good because many xd owners will be ripping around corners after they add toyota racing development suspension components.  switches are well placed, with the audio system above the air conditioning controls in the center stack. All the knobs are big and easy to find, though those for the climate controls have a slightly loose, jerky feel.  the gauges are mixed bag. The primary display, which scion calls a concentric combination meter, is a speedometer and tachometer in one package, centered over the adjustable steering column. It's designed to be different, but in this case it's not better. With the tachometer and speedometer needles moving in opposite directions around a circle, it's hard to process the information at a glance. The gas gauge is a bright, easy-to-read led to the left of the steering column, and the xd comes standard with a multi-information display that allows the driver to toggle between the odometer, trip meters, instant fuel economy, average fuel economy, distance-to-empty and average vehicle speed. Not long ago, such trip computers were reserved for luxury cars.  the 160-watt pioneer sound system with six speakers is loud and clear, and plenty for a car this size. The standard system is wired for ipod, mp3/wma, and satellite, and includes an auxiliary input jack. Like the trip computer, the redundant audio controls on the steering wheel spoke are the exception in this class.  somehow, despite gaining three inches in wheelbase, the scion xd has less interior space than the xa model it replaces. It's lost one inch of legroom in front, and passenger volume overall has decreased, from 86. 0 cubic feet to 84. 5.  the xd's rear seat is quite roomy when rear-passenger space is maximized. The rear seat easily slides forward or backward six inches, adding space for either cargo behind the seatback or passengers in front of it. With the rear seat moved full forward, there's enough legroom for a 12-year old; with the rear seat moved back, there's room for medium-sized adults. Head room is expansive, and with the front seat set for a 5-foot, 10-inch driver, there was enough rear legroom for a 5-foot, 9. Crossovers are supposed to combine the best attributes of sport-utility vehicles, sedans and minivans, and the Pacifica still does that as well as any, at very attractive prices. New engine and transmission offer better fuel economy and power. IntroductionThe Chrysler Pacifica helped launch a trend that those in the car business call crossover vehicles.  For 2007, the Pacifica benefits from fairly substantial changes, starting with a smoother, more powerful V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission
